Black pepper, meat and wild game aromas are interesting and distinct. The dark chocolate and herbal flavors have just a touch of raspberry, and are masked by aggressive tannins that should settle with time. —C.S.

This bright, friendly wine from southern Oregon’s Rogue Valley shows appealing sour cherry, plum and beet flavors on a lean frame. Brisk yet even, its chocolate and herb notes accent tart fruit on the finish. Light and tasty, it’s best consumed now through 2004.
