A relative bargain in the scheme of South Australian Shiraz, this is a cherry-picked selection from the Baker’s Gully Vineyard. It smells like mint, vanilla and chocolate at first, then unfolds on the palate into something akin to thin mints with vanilla and blackberry sauces, topped with black olives and coffee—yet all in one harmonious, savory whole. Long, silky…

Aged in a combination of French and American oak, this is a best-barrel selection, not culled from a particular vineyard parcel. It shows plenty of complexity even at this young age, revealing hints of savory meat and cedar, black olive and even a bit of asphalt, then turning sweeter and fruitier on the finish.

This great value turns the neat trick of boasting an almost molasses-like density of fruit without seeming overly heavy. It’s full-bodied, with hints of smoke, vanilla and herbs that add complexity to the cherry fruit, while on the finish, the tannins are soft and the flavors linger elegantly. Drink now through 2012.

This impeccably made wine boasts a rich, almost unctuous mouthfeel that beautifully complements its flavors of blackberries, dried spices, toast and vanilla. It’s delicious now, but the flavors are so young and primary it’s hard to imagine it not being even better in another year or two. Long on the finish, with echoes of oak and fruit lingering elegantly.

McLaren Vale isn’t known for Riesling the same way as the Clare or Eden Valleys are, but this effort is a strong one, showing hints of nectarine and tangerine alongside slatey, minerally components. Finishes long and steely, but cushioned just the right amount by ripe fruit. Drink now, although this might age for a few years.

This is a lush, richly textured Chardonnay that showcases ripe peach and melon wrapped in a soft cocoon of vanilla and buttered toast. Yes, the wine is woody, but the fruit matches the oak's intensity. Ends long, marked by dried spice nuances.

Despite the name, only 10 barrels of this wine were made in the difficult 2003 vintage. It’s round and full, soft but not completely lacking structure. Lush cassis and chocolate flavors firm up a bit on the finish, adding hints of dried spices and cedar. Drink now-2015.
