Tarius 1999 Korte Ranch Zinfandel (Napa Valley)
-
$29
The Tarius manages to be at once creamy and on the lean side; think—as its palate exhibits—cream, vanilla bean, and a smidge of lemon rind over big blackberry flavors. Just-as-dark berry, plus soil, tangy oak and slight chocolate notes show on the nose; finishes with nice, tart chalkboard-eraser, oak and blackberry flavors. —D.M.

Tarius 1998 Aldine Vineyard Zinfandel (Mendocino)
-
$29
Has the prettiest aromas of raspberries, roasted coffee beans, vanilla, and violets, with a hint of white chocolate and cinnamon. Superextracted and dense; 15.3% alcohol. A thick, gooey, cough-medicine quality keeps the rating from soaring.
