Telmo Rodríguez 2004 Altos de Lanzaga Tempranillo (Rioja)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $105
Masculine and heady stuff, as leather, espresso, smoked meat, mocha and intense blackberry aromas set the stage for an intense, driven, structured palate that’s full of coconut, vanilla bean, cocoa and pure plum and berry. A serious nuevo classico Rioja if there ever was one.  — M.S.  (9/1/2007)

Telmo Rodríguez 2005 Matallana Red (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $145
With Matallana, you must pay for your pleasure. But pleasurable it is. The nose is a splendid blend of licorice, baking spices, cassis and black plum. The approach is neither quiet nor loud, but well-spoken. It pumps forth huge black cherry and plum fruit, but offsets any raw size with tobacco, herb, coffee and other subtleties. A touch hard now but should soften…  — M.S.  (4/1/2009)

Telmo Rodríguez 2001 Matallana Red (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $93
Smooth, smoky and leathery is how this winner gets going, and backing that up is a palate of laser-beam intensity. This offers nothing less than an explosion of plum and cherry flavors, but the style is clean and fresh, not heavy or overoaked. Already it shows nice evolution, as it comes across drinkable. Ethereal in how the finish just slips away. Only 375 cases…  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Telmo Rodríguez 1998 Valderiz Red (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $25
An exciting offering from the former winemaker at Remelluri, this wine shows fine purity of fruit with black cherry, chocolate and licorice elements on the nose and in the mouth. It has fine tannic structure without being harsh. Displays mineral, earth, and cocoa notes on the long finish.  — M.M.  (8/1/2000)

Telmo Rodríguez 2003 Altos de Lanzaga Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $82
Right away this shows the requisite signs of excellence. The meaty, earthy, leathery, full-fruit nose is just right, and the palate is elevated in how it is infused with pure blackberry and plum as well as chocolate and fine herbs. Finishes with class and kick. Best from 2008–2011.  — M.S.  (9/1/2007)

Telmo Rodríguez 1998 Altos Lanzaga Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $20
A wonderful find, this wine is almost opaque in color. Attractive aromas of dark cherry and cinnamon are followed by a big palate of similar flavors with added cocoa and herb notes. The wine is full-bodied, and has very even tannins and a handsome finish of dried fruits that picks up earth and licorice accents. A lot of wine for the money.  — M.M.  (8/1/2000)

Telmo Rodríguez 2003 Gago Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  1. $25
Coffee grounds, some minty wood and lots of ripe fruit greet you, and the lower levels contain all the sweet, dark fruit and oak-based chocolate and vanilla one could ever ask for. This is new-age wine to the max, and some might call it overdone. But if you like ripeness and a rowdy mix of body, tannins and acidity, this is it.  — M.S.  (11/1/2007)

Telmo Rodríguez 2005 Gago Tinta de Toro (Toro)

  1. $31
Very concentrated and ripe, with all of the daintyness of an offensive tackle dancing a jig. At this early age the wine has some spine, but it will likely grow soft and lose clarity over time. For now, expect huge doses of smoked meat, soft-ish tannins, and lush black fruit. It’s a dense, high-octane wine that would go great with any sort of stew, like wild boar or…  — M.S.  (6/1/2008)
