Tenuta Caparzo 1999 La Casa Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $120
Fuller, richer and creamier-textured than the normale, La Casa, from a single vineyard, starts with showy scents of smoked meat, cedar and black cherries, then moves into vanilla, black cherry, earth and tobacco flavors. Tannic on the finish, but also very long—promising much for the future. Try in 2010.  — W.E.  (3/1/2005)

Tenuta Caparzo 1999 Ca’ del Pazzo Sangiovese (Sant'Antimo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $40
This 50-50 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon is really dominated by Cabernet at this stage of its evolution, delivering lots of cassis and tobacco flavors. This medium-weight wine is supple and creamy enough to enjoy tonight, but holding it will likely bring out more Sangiovese character.  — W.E.  (3/1/2005)

Tenuta Caparzo 1997 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $65
A smooth, polished performance from this 100-acre estate. The 1997 is modern in style, exhibiting huge but not too-dominant wood aromas and flavors, balancing with sweet, ripe berry fruit and black cherry jam. This is a wine that should be accessible young in four or five years, but should certainly age well over the following 10 or more.  — R.V.  (8/1/2002)

This mostly Chardonnay white is from TuscanyæSant’Antimo is the DOC for nontraditional wines from the village of Montalcino. Dry apple flavors are deftly melded with toasty oak, while Sauvignon Blanc and Traminer in the blend add character and interesting flavor accents. Finishes long and spicy, with elegant oak notes.  — M.M.  (9/1/2001)

Tenuta Caparzo 2000 Sangiovese (Rosso di Montalcino)

  1. $21
Smoky and tight, with a hint of lemony oak on the nose. The palate bursts with ripe cassis, cherry and tannin, while later on you get a smack of cough drop as the red fruit unfolds. This is ripe as all get-out, a firm, chewy specimen for sure.  — M.S.  (11/15/2003)

Tenuta Caparzo 1993 Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $52
Intense and pure, with fine ripeness, supreme balance and a reserved personality. Quite easy to get into and enjoy tonight, this is a Brunello that’s rich, deep and sexy. Clean cherry fruit on an upright frame; a very elegant and structured total package.  — M.S.  (11/15/1999)

Tenuta Caparzo 1999 Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $60
Classically styled, Caparzo’s regular Brunello reveals plenty of leather and cherry aromas and flavors. But it also offers additional hints of chocolate, cedar and raspberry that put it on another level. Finishes long and softly tannic with firm acidity.  — W.E.  (3/1/2005)

Tenuta Caparzo 2001 Vigna La Casa Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  1. $120
Menthol, toast and modest berry offset a stern and firmly tannic wine that needs more time in the cellar. Wood notes tend to obscure the fruit and the finish is dry and somewhat astringent. Imported by Vineyard Brands.  — W.E.  (4/1/2006)
