Terra d'Oro NV Zinfandel Port (Amador County)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $24
The first duty of a Port-style wine is to be dazzlingly rich and sweet yet balanced in acidity, and this bottling is all that. Waves of blackberry jam, cassis and dark chocolate are brightened with zesty acidity, and the sweetness level is very high.  — S.H.  (12/15/2010)

Terra d'Oro 2006 Home Vineyard Zinfandel (Amador County)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $29
A beautiful Zinfandel from a winery with lots of know-how. The wine is medium-bodied, with a graceful structure of finely ground tannins that makes it drinkable right away. The flavors are pure mountain Zin, intense in peppery currants, cocoa and licorice.  — S.H.  (3/1/2009)

Terra d'Oro 2000 Deaver Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel (Amador County)

  1. $24
Manages to marry Zin’s wild, untrammelled character with the finesse and elegance of a fine red wine. Hard to believe it has nearly 16% of alcohol. The berry and tobacco flavors are dry and perfectly balanced. If you’re serving any kind of upscale barbecue, consider this wine.  — S.H.  (9/1/2003)

Terra d'Oro 2000 Home Vineyard Zinfandel (Amador County)

  1. $24
From a tiny, four-acre vineyard, a wine that defines Amador Zin, which is saying a lot. Bright, briary and brambly fruit, like picking wild berries on a hot summer day in the mountains. The wine is totally dry, which is why the alcohol is so high, nearly 16%, but completely delicious.  — S.H.  (9/1/2003)

This stylish blend from Montevina’s Terra d’Oro brand shows smooth, tangy ripe fruit, highlighted with spice and lifted a bit with acids. Seamless attack and a smooth, stylish mouthfeel. —P.G.  — P.G.  (3/1/2002)

Terra d'Oro 2007 Barbera (Amador County)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Super-spicy, offering a blast of white and black pepper, briary blackberry, black cherry sour candy, cola and coffee flavors wrapped into vigorous tannins. Retains the basically rustic nature of Barbera, but it’s one of the better ones out there. Try as a smoother alternative to Zinfandel.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Terra d'Oro 1999 Syrah (Amador County)

  1. $18
The closed nose shows subtle toast, cocoa and unleavened bread-flour aromas; the palate shows jammy berry fruit and sweet maple-syrup flavors. Finishes with chalk and spicy pepper. This Syrah has depth, but needs two years to open up a bit.  — W.E.  (10/1/2001)

Terra d'Oro 2007 Deaver Vineyard Zinfandel (Amador County)

  1. $30
With inviting Dr. Pepper-like aromas, this Terra d’Oro Deaver Vineyard wine is structured like a building, with lots of savory layers over sweet. It’s big alcohol-content wise at 15.5% but is a good example of Deaver’s intriguing blend of power and finesse.  — V.B.  (9/1/2011)
