Testarossa

Located in Los Gatos, California, Testarossa Winery was established in 1993 by Rob and Diana Jensen. The husband-and-wife duo started by producing 25 cases in their garage; today, more than 15,000 cases are produced annually, including single-vineyard bottlings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Grapes are sourced by Testarossa from more than a dozen vineyards located throughout the Central Coast, including the world class Bien Nacido, Sleepy Hollow and Pisoni Vineyards. Testarossa’s ratings are consistently high; over the years, many of the wines have received accolades, including the 1998 Cuvée Niclaire Pinot Noir being named the #1 Pinot Noir in Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Top 100 Wines of 2001. The 2004 Diana's Reserve Chardonnay, 2001 Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Chardonnay and the 1999 Signature Reserve Chardonnay have all been awarded W.E. Editors’ Choice status.

Testarossa 2001 Michaud Vineyard Pinot Noir (Chalone)

  1. $50
From up in the Chalone highlands, this is a fruity wine, filled up upfront flavors of cherries, raspberries, cola and spices. The structure is simple, with silky tannins and decent acids supporting the flavors without establishing any great depth or complexities.  — S.H.  (7/1/2003)

Testarossa 2001 Palazzio Pinot Noir (Monterey)

  1. $32
A three-county blend of cool coastal climate Pinots. Shows pretty flavors of cherries and raspberries and peppery spices, in a light, silky package with firm acidity.  — S.H.  (7/1/2003)

Heavy and seemingly sweet, this has the taste of black raspberry syrup and melted red licorice.  — S.H.  (8/1/2012)

Testarossa 2007 Graham Family Vineyard Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $54
Starts off smelling vegetal, although with breathing the cherries come through. In the mouth, turns simple in fruit, with a silky texture. Disappointing.  — S.H.  (5/1/2009)

Testarossa 2001 Castello Chardonnay (Santa Barbara)

  1. $26
The least expensive of Testarossa’s offerings, this blended regional wine is also the least interesting. It is thin in flavors and high in acids, with a curiously burnt, ashy taste on the finish.  — S.H.  (10/1/2003)
