Three Sticks 2009 Durell Vineyard Chardonnay (Sonoma Valley)

Another very nice Chardonnay from Durell. It’s almost too oaky, with charred, buttered toast aromas and flavors dominating. But the underlying tropical fruit, orange cream and mineral flavors are fine, and so is the zesty acidity. The winemaker might want to lower the amount of new oak, or the level of toast, because the wine really doesn’t need that much.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

Three Sticks 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)

A seriously good Cabernet that advances the cause of Sonoma Valley. It’s soft and rich and decadently good, offering wave after wave of blackberry pie, cherry jam and sweet oak flavors that are a little on the sweet side. Shows enough acidity and tannin structure to provide balance. Drink now with a good steak, chop or lamb dish.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

Three Sticks 2007 Durell Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

Caramelized oak dominates this Pinot Noir. Below that toasty char is an extremely ripe wine that seems to define long hangtime. The cherry flavors approach red currants and have suggestions of shriveled berries that veer into licorice and grilled fruit. It’s quite complex, but juvenile, with a youthful impertinence. Best to give it 3–5 years to come around.  — S.H.  (10/1/2010)

Acidity marks this wine, giving it a cut that streaks right down the middle of the blackberry, black cherry and cedar flavors. It’s very dry, with rich, refined tannins, and that acidity will come in handy paired against a steak.  — S.H.  (12/31/2010)

Three Sticks 2009 Durell Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

  1. $60
Like the winery’s 2008 Pinot, this new 2009 is tart. Its acidity cuts right through the rich, ripe cherry and raspberry fruit, giving the wine a sour candy taste. Everything else about it is great.  — S.H.  (6/1/2012)

Three Sticks 2008 Durell Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

  1. $55
Lots of raspberry, cherry, vanilla and new oak richness in this Pinot Noir, and it’s dry and silky. Would score higher except for intrusive acidity that cuts through the mouth like a scalpel. That makes it unbalanced, even though it’s delicious.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

Dry and tannic, this has a baked quality to its fruit, tasting warm and raisiny.  — S.H.  (11/1/2012)
