Tikal 2006 Amorío Malbec (Altos de Mendoza)

  1. $31
Roasted and a touch fiery at first, but then this big-boned Malbec settles into a dark-fruit zone with accents of fresh herbs and tobacco. It’s a structured wine with nice plum, blackberry and chocolate flavors, while licorice and herbal notes work the finish. The last vintage of Armorío we tried was 2001; so it’s good to see the wine is holding steady.  — M.S.  (11/1/2008)

Tikal 2010 Natural Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $20
Like most Tikal wines, this is beefy and saturated, with grapy, creamy, dark fruit aromas. Feels tight and lush in the mouth, with a meaty structure and dense flavors of blackberry and herbs. Turns more herbal as it unwinds before finishing toasty and thick.  — M.S.  (12/31/2011)

Tikal 2001 Amorío Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $30
Based on the surreal label and heavy bottle, you almost expect the richest version of Malbec, but it’s actually a bit reserved, emphasizing zingy red-berry fruit, modest oak and a racy mouthfeel. Ernesto Catena, son of Nicolas, is the proprietor, and he’s done well in channeling the zest that Malbec can deliver.  — M.S.  (12/1/2003)

Tikal 2009 Amorío Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $33
A savory bouquet includes aromas of chocolate, smoke, blackberry and earthy plum. The palate shows grip and a syrupy density, while the flavors run towards candied black fruits, leather and savory spice. Very ripe and a bit soft and sweet. Drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Tikal 2009 Patriota Malbec-Bonarda (Mendoza)

  1. $20
Black fruit, licorice, cola and chocolate aromas cover the bases. The palate is full, sweet and saturated, with a slight syrupy feel and bold blackberry, blueberry and mocha flavors. Sweet on the finish, with vanilla, coffee and a small wash of herbal green; 60% Bonarda/40% Malbec.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Tikal 2007 Amorío Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $33
A big wine, but some persistent sulphur and earthiness on the nose results in aromas of leather, scrambled eggs and tobacco. Rugged on the palate, but that’s to be expected for a big-boned Malbec like this. Flavors of blackberry and black cherry are supported by powerful oak, leather and an infusion of herbs. Drinkable now and best through 2010.  — M.S.  (12/31/2008)

Tikal 2006 Patriota Red (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $25
Try as we might to understand very ripe Bonarda blended with low-acid Malbec, it doesn’t make sense...and this example doesn’t help much. It’s a little green and funky, with mineral, asphalt and prune aromas. The palate is soft, semidark and baked, with chocolate and medium tannins on the finish. A strange blend that comes out strange.  — M.S.  (11/1/2008)
