Tin House 2004 Pinot Noir (Edna Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $32
Tasted blind, I thought this was Russian River. It has the classic balance, complexity and flavors of that region, showing cherries, cola, rhubarb pie, pomegranates and spice, with a full-bodied dryness and long, ageworthy finish. Maybe part of the confusion is the Dijon clones. Whatever, it’s a really wonderful Pinot Noir, succulent and compelling.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Tin House 2007 Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

  1. $30
Here’s a dry, crisply elegant Pinot Noir to drink now with fine fare. It’s quite ripe, and retains a nice silkiness that frames black cherry, red currants, Dr. Pepper cola, raspberry preserve and smoky sandalwood. Best now–2012.  — S.H.  (4/1/2010)

Tin House 2008 Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

  1. $30
Lots of sweet fruit and oak in this easy-drinking, sophisticated Pinot. It shows raspberry, cherry, vanilla and buttered toast flavors, sprinkled with the clove, cinnamon and white pepper spices that the Santa Maria Valley is famous for. Drink now.  — S.H.  (8/1/2011)

Tin House 2005 Pinot Noir (Edna Valley)

  1. $38
Tin House has been producing good Pinot Noirs that have been pushing the possibilities for Edna Valley, although the prices are going up every year. This bottling shows pure, ripe cherry, currant and cocoa flavors and rich, sweet oak, with the acidity that characterizes everything from this cool part of the Central Coast. Drink now through 2010.  — S.H.  (12/15/2008)

Tin House 2004 Syrah (Edna Valley)

  1. $26
Acidity and dryness mark this wine. It’s not particularly rich or lush, but it has a sleek elegance, with suggestions of blackberries, mulberries and tobacco. Rich fare will wake it up.  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Tin House 2003 Syrah (Edna Valley)

  1. $26
I wish this Syrah were just a little drier, but that aside, it’s a rewarding wine. Flooded with black cherry and cassis fruit, as well as smoky oak, it has the beautiful acidity and fine tannins of its terroir.  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Tin House 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Santa Barbara County)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $28
Hard to explain why the winery is only now releasing this wine at 4-plus years, but it’s not going to get any better. Rustic and tannic, it has medicinal flavors of cherries and currants, with an astringent finish.  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)
