Tohu 2001 Pinot Noir (Marlborough)
Price
$25
Quite purple, with sweet cherry, dried herb and flower petal aromas. The palate is smoky and modestly complex, with a fine mix of cherry and chocolate. The finish grows deeper and darker, emphasizing tar and espresso. Medium in body, but packing punch. The feel is fresh yet firm.

Tohu 2002 Pinot Noir (Marlborough)
Price
$20
Notice the price decrease for this wine, which boasts young cherry, cranberry and herbal notes. There’s even some bacon in there. The palate is snappy and defined by strawberry, while orange peel and pepper notes drive the finish. This wine should hit stride in late 2003/early 2004. Right now it’s a bit young and tangy.

Tohu 2007 Pinot Noir (Marlborough)
Price
$30
A Maori-owned company, Tohu has been crafting solid wines for close to a decade. The 2007 Pinot Noir features standard cherry and cola notes, accented by some darker, coffee-like aromas and flavors. The tannins are negligible, with crisp acids providing the necessary punch on the finish. Drink now.

Tohu 2005 Pinot Noir (Marlborough)
Price
$23
Like many 2005s, this is a considerable step up over the previous vintage, boasting better concentration and ripeness than the somewhat lackluster 2004. While there’s a lot of savory notes of cola, meat and spice to this wine, it gets a lift on the finish from hints of raspberry and vanilla. Drink now.

Tohu 2002 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)
Best Buy
Price
$14
Very typical of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It has piercing green pepper and snap pea aromas along with hints of jalapeño, lychee, passion fruit and grapefruit. There are lively apple and gooseberry flavors, and then comes a tangy tangerine finish. The epitome of a pick it, crush it and tank it white wine.

Tohu 2005 Unoaked Chardonnay (Gisborne)
Price
$16
Fresh and lively, combining peach, apple and citrus flavors in a fruit cocktail of a wine that’s just complex enough to stand up sip after sip. It’s medium-bodied, with a juicy, mouthwatering finish. Pair it with grilled chicken or fish and a fruit-based salsa.

Tohu 2003 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)
Best Buy
Price
$14
Prototypical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, boasting pungent aromas of passion fruit and capsicum. The slightly oily texture allows the flavors—green pepper balanced by riper notes of melon and fig—to slowly unfurl across the palate, finishing clean and refreshing.

Tohu 1999 Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)
Price
$15
This one falls squarely into the white-grapefruit and lime category. Quite herbal, with an outright green streak in the midpalate. Good tropical-fruit core, and round. Easy to drink, not piercing, and a little metallic. There’s a basil-oregano note to the finish.
— M.S.
