Tolosa 2004 1772 Edna Ranch Chardonnay (Edna Valley)

  1. $42
Here’s a really good Chardonnay: Crisp, delicate and dry, it shows great acidity and brilliant fruit, saturating the palate with pineapple tart, Key lime pie, vanilla cream, crème brûlée and cinnamon spice flavors. Finishes with the deliciously creamy, yeasty complexities of lees aging.  — S.H.  (9/1/2007)

Tolosa 2006 Estate Edna Ranch Chardonnay (Edna Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
By itself, Tolosa’s Edna Ranch Chardonnay is rich and crisp, always exhibiting exciting flavors of limes, kiwis and pineapples. Add oak barrels, and complex layers appear, of peaches and cream, vanilla fudge and buttered toast. All that, and the wine is entirely dry.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Tolosa 2004 1772 Edna Ranch Syrah (Edna Valley)

  1. $46
Tolosa has been making seriously good Syrah for some years now. The quality shows not just in the ripeness, but in the acidity that gives the wine brightness and balance. This was a warm vintage, even in cool Edna Valley, and the wine shows extraordinarily powerful blackberry-pie filling, cherry compote and chocolate flavors, but that high acidity really makes the…  — S.H.  (9/1/2007)

Tolosa 2007 Salaal Red (Edna Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
Based on Syrah, this is a distinguished, upscale blend. It’s bone dry and quite tannic, with crisp Central Coast acidity, but most importantly it shows deep, intricate flavors of blackberries, currants, licorice, cola and sandalwood. A very fine release from Tolosa.  — S.H.  (7/1/2010)

Tolosa 2003 Edna Ranch Chardonnay (Edna Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
There’s something about certain Central Coast Chards that’s delicious, bright, pure in tangerine, papaya and honey, brilliant in acidity, and just so drinkable. This is one. It’s quite a wine, and at this price, a comparative value.  — S.H.  (11/1/2005)

Tolosa 2001 Edna Ranch Reserve 1772 Pinot Noir (Edna Valley)

  1. $42
A first-rate Pinot that takes its zesty, jammy flavors and pushes them into real complexity. The cherries, raspberries and cola have a gingerbready spicy sweetness to them, although the wine is fully dry, backed up with firm acids. Turns meaty and chewy, showing real solidity and finesse.  — S.H.  (12/1/2004)

Tolosa 2006 Salaal Red (Edna Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
Rich, full-bodied and dry, this blend of unspecified varieties has a dense, mouth-filling quality to it. Tannic and crisp, its flavors veer toward ripe black currants, beef tartare, tamari and dark chocolate, and while that sounds weird, it’s actually quite harmonious. Drink now.  — S.H.  (5/1/2009)

Tolosa 2006 1772 Edna Ranch Chardonnay (Edna Valley)

  1. $42
Very rich in oak and ripe fruit, with kiwi, lime, pineapple and fig flavors that finish crisp and dry. The oak really stands out with its blast of buttered toast, caramel and woodspice.  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)
