It displays the fresh, keen acidity of the vineyard, which grows no reds, and detonates on the palate with tremendous apricot, papaya, mango, pineapple, tangerine, peach and mineral flavors. Treana 2002 Austin Hope Syrah (Paso Robles)

The vineyard is in the cooler, western part of the AVA, and the wine opens with a promising blast of white pepper. Turns rich, full-bodied and complex, with an array of blackberry, plum, coffee, cigar tobacco, spice and oak notes. This is a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s full-bodied and ripely sweet in fruit, in the manner of a Paso Robles red wine. What it may lack in subtlety, it more than makes up in sheer power. Dark, thick, ripe and juicy, this is a big mouthful of Syrah that calls for roasts or similar fare. It’s very dry, with blackberry, plum and peppery flavors and a tasty overlay of oak.
