Treana has established this as one of the top Rhône whites in California. The ’03 is an amazing wine. It displays the fresh, keen acidity of the vineyard, which grows no reds, and detonates on the palate with tremendous apricot, papaya, mango, pineapple, tangerine, peach and mineral flavors. It’s basically dry, although there’s a touch of botrytis honey.

Treana has enjoyed great success with this blend of Viognier and Marsanne, which is one of the best Rhône-style white wines in California. The main reason is the source of the grapes. The vineyard, owned by the Wagners of Caymus, is stellar. The ’06 is as rich and crisply acidic as ever, with fantastically complex, honeyed tropical fruit, apricot and floral flavors…

From the northernmost vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, a fantastically interesting wine. Complex and compelling, with brilliant fruit flavors spanning the range from apricots and limes to peaches and guava. All this juicy flavor is boosted by bright and beautiful acidity. Viognier 61%, Marsanne 39%.

The vineyard is in the cooler, western part of the AVA, and the wine opens with a promising blast of white pepper. Turns rich, full-bodied and complex, with an array of blackberry, plum, coffee, cigar tobacco, spice and oak notes. The tannins are fairly thick and astringent, suggesting lamb, pork tenderloin or similar fare.

Cabernet Sauvignon gives this wine a luscious, elegant mouthfeel, with classic currant and cedar flavors. Syrah brings a gamy, leathery note, with white pepper accents. The result is an interesting, complex young wine of power and authority. Drink now.

Quietly, under the radar, Treana’s red blend is turning into an interesting and exciting wine over every vintage. The ’05, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, shows Paso Robles terroir at its best. The wine is soft, but no softer than a cult Napa Cab, and enormously rich in currant, licorice, chocolate, smoky oak and cinnamon spice flavors that are just…

This is a blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s full-bodied and ripely sweet in fruit, in the manner of a Paso Robles red wine. What it may lack in subtlety, it more than makes up in sheer power. Floods the mouth with blackberries, cherries, currants, plums, mocha, violets, leather, tobacco and pepper spice. Now–2012.

Dark, thick, ripe and juicy, this is a big mouthful of Syrah that calls for roasts or similar fare. It’s very dry, with blackberry, plum and peppery flavors and a tasty overlay of oak. Notable for the smooth ripeness of its rich, sweet tannins, and might even improve for a few years.
