Tyrrell's 2003 DB24 Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $80
Tyrrell’s new flagship Shiraz, the DB24 was matured in two sets of new oak barrels for a total of 24 months, yet remarkably isn’t overoaked. Instead, it offers luscious aromas of blackberries and vanilla but also intriguing soy and grilled meat notes. It’s full-bodied and densely packed, like a coiled spring that needs some time to relax. Finishes with firm…  — J.C.  (12/15/2006)

Tyrrell's 1999 Vat 6 Hunter Pinot Noir (Hunter Valley)

  1. $50
A lush Pinot, the Vat 6 smolders with mixed cherry and steeped tea flavors; the wood that shows on the medium-long finish is also smoky, and tastes more like hickory than oak. Has smooth, gummy tannins and spicy cumin and ginger aromas. Drink this with a duck dish—any duck dish.  — D.T.  (5/1/2004)

Tyrrell's 2000 Vat 47 Chardonnay (Hunter Valley)

  1. $50
A very nice wine that’s zesty and fresh in the mouth, and deep gold in color, the Vat 47 offers bright yellow fruit flavors, with light vanilla, toast and citrus accents. Nose is alternately perfumey and toasty. Tasted twice.  — W.E.  (8/1/2003)

Tyrrell's 2003 Vat 47 Chardonnay (Hunter Valley)

  1. $40
This Chardonnay takes a little while to unfold in the glass, but when it does, fresh vanilla bean and cream aromas emerge. More of the same follows through on the palate, where there’s also some almond and fresh white peach flavors. Zips shut with a burst of lemon. Suave, and will only improve with age. Imported by Pasternak Wine Imports.  — D.T.  (4/1/2006)

Tyrrell's 1999 Reserve Merlot (McLaren Vale)

  1. $37
The nose on this wine is still very tight, showing only earth. However, the flavors explode with bright Bing cherries and spicy cedar. Mouthfeel is lush and velvety, leading to a lingering finish. A wine made to enjoy now, but will last another 5-7 years.  — C.S.  (6/1/2002)

Tyrrell's 2003 Lost Block Chardonnay (South Eastern Australia)

  1. $14
This is the kind of Chard you want to have on the table when you’ve ordered a scallop course, or white fish (and it would be no shame to enjoy it barefoot in the grass). It has pretty, summery aromas of citrus and yellow peach, streaked with just a hint of smoke. The palate reprises the yellow peaches, couched in a dusty-minerally feel. Tyrrell's 2002 Old Winery Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (New South Wales)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
Has an eye-opening, eucalyptus-cherry-plum profile, with just a few blackberries thrown in for good measure. Finishes with dark berries and more eucalyptus. A very good wine, if perhaps an acquired taste.  — D.T.  (12/31/2003)

Tyrrell's 2000 Reserve Chardonnay (Hunter Valley)

  1. $37
The pear, apple and herb aromas and flavors here are almost swamped by the spicy oak. Bright acidity and the powerful wood presence give the wine a rather lean cast, but this ship rights itself, and keeps its balance nicely in the end. The lively finish and overall tangy personality will pair well with grilled shellfish or broiled seafood.  — M.M.  (6/1/2001)
