Umathum 2006 Unter den Terrassen zu Jois Pinot Noir (Burgenland)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $65
One of Austria’s most successful Pinot Noirs, exhibiting both the wild cherry and jammy red berry fruits of the grape and also impressive Burgundian tannic structure. It is big, dense, powerful, a juicy streak of acidity giving a powerful element. Age for 3–4 years.  — R.V.  (3/1/2010)

Umathum 2004 Joiser Kirschgarten Blaufränkisch (Burgenland)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $60
This comes from a terraced vineyard that Josef Umathum revived in 2001. Here is an already impressive testament to the quality of the vineyard. With its aromas of cedar and pine cones, the palate is densely packed with black fruits, dark tannins, red berries and a chocolate finish.  — R.V.  (12/31/2007)

Umathum 2004 Hallebühl Red (Burgenland)

  1. $60
Made from 40-year-old vines, this blend, dominated by Zweigelt, but also with some Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon, is concentrated and intensely fruity, with an elegant, smooth texture that only hints at the concentrated tannic structure underneath. It’s not hugely powerful; it’s more sensuous and deliciously long-lasting.  — R.V.  (10/1/2007)

Umathum 2006 Beerenauslese White (Burgenland)

  1. $19
Richness in a glass, this flows around the mouth, unctuous, velvety, a mouthful of honey. If the acidity is only just a hint, it doesn’t matter, this is delicious now, and a seductive treat.  — R.V.  (12/31/2007)

Umathum 2008 Traminer (Burgenland)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $24
A blend of Gelber and Roter Traminer from a 40-year-old vineyard. With heavily spiced aromas and a concentrated lychee flavor, the wine has a rich, gorgeous texture, all soft fruits and ripeness. It’s a beautiful dry wine, a veritable perfume cabinet. Glass stopper.  — R.V.  (7/1/2010)

Umathum 2006 Grauburgunder (Burgenland)

  1. $25
Whites from red wine specialist Umathum are rare, but then so is Pinot Gris in Austria. This wine has a racy quality, topped with spice that sets it apart from its nearest comparison, Alsace. There is a touch of wood as well as the spice, lively and fresh to finish.  — R.V.  (12/31/2007)

Umathum 2001 Frauenkirchner Vom Stein St. Laurent (Burgenland)

  1. $67
This pretty, well-balanced wine starts off with scents of baked, jammy fruit and fresh cookie dough, while the flavors feature brighter, snappier cherry elements. Medium in weight, with almost sweet vanilla notes on the finish. Drink now, although it should hold for a few years because of its balance. Imported by Vin Divino.  — J.C.  (3/1/2006)

Umathum 2003 Zweigelt (Burgenland)

  1. $20
A bit Syrah-like, with smoke accents to its cherry and blackberry fruit, and a hint of pepper on the finish. Medium- to full-bodied, with a creamy, lush mouthfeel and little tannin. Drink over the near term. Imported by Vin Divino.  — J.C.  (3/1/2006)
