Undurraga

Undurraga Winery was founded in 1885 by Don Francisco Undurraga, one of the pioneers of winemaking in Chile. With plants he brought over from France and Germany, and under the supervision of the renowned French viticulturist M. Pressac, he developed the first Undurraga Vineyards on his Santa Ana Estate in the heart of Maipo Valley. The first grape varieties that were planted included Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer and by 1903 they were the first Chilean winery to ship to the US according to our Undurraga wine reviews. Today the Undurraga family owns over 2,000 acres of prime vineyards in the Maipo and Colchagua Valleys and Undurraga wines are present in over 70 countries on five continents. Undurraga wines are known for providing quality and value across their entire portfolio according to our Undurraga wine ratings. Undurraga 1999 Reserve Carmenère (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $11
For Carmenère, this one is sharper than most. The mouth is tight and lean, with red cherries and only some meaty, earthy character. The finish is basic.  — M.S.  (3/1/2002)

Undurraga 2002 Gewürztraminer (Maipo Valley)

  1. $9
One whiff and you know what you have. The nose offers wild flower, mustard seed and telltale lychee fruit. The body is fairly rich, and there are flavors of custard, apple, banana and nutmeg-like spice. The finish is simultaneously chewy and fresh, which is a testament to the wine’s forward acidity.  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)

Undurraga 2005 Sauvignon Blanc (Central Valley)

  1. $7
About as new as you can get, here’s a fresh, simple ’05 Sauvignon that may not rock your world but it won’t rock your wallet, either. Melon and apple aromas get it started, followed by kiwi, honeydew and pineapple flavors. There’s medium zest from moderate acidity, and some citrus rind on the finish. To call it innocuous would be unfair, but harmless, even friendly…  — M.S.  (11/15/2005)

Undurraga 2003 Reserva Merlot (Maipo Valley)

  1. $11
Shows some bramble and pickle on the nose along with a heavy blast of molasses. The palate, however, is more sharp and piquant than expected. Finishes with overt oak and acidity, which creates a lean, tangy finishing sensation. Imported by Undurraga USA.  — M.S.  (5/1/2006)

Undurraga 2004 Founder's Collection Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

  1. $22
Undurraga’s high-tier Cabernet is an austere wine with strength and hard tannins but very little elegance. The bouquet issues a strong blast of rubbery red fruit, which is backed by jammy but rough red-fruit flavors. To this taster, this producer’s standard premium wines offer better value.  — M.S.  (12/31/2006)

Undurraga 2006 Reserva Merlot (Maipo Valley)

  1. $12
Starts with plain and simple sweet fruit then offers lean red-fruit flavors slathered with a blanket’s worth of buttery oak. And thus the feel is creamy and lactic. Maybe this will improve with some bottle age, but not guarantees.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)

Undurraga 2006 Reserva Chardonnay (Maipo Valley)

  1. $12
Peach, vanilla and match stick notes work the nose, followed by flavors of banana, citrus and vanilla. The wine has full-blast acidity working in its favor, thus it’s sort of racy and driving even if the oak is unabsorbed and the finish rather hollow. Totally New World in style, feel and flavor.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)

Undurraga 2006 Sibaris Reserva Especial Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $17
Rooty and on the verge of being overripe, this is yet another 2006 Cabernet from Chile with hot-weather signatures draped all over it. The nose is baked, while the fruit is all sweet black plum and berry with heat on the finish.  — M.S.  (7/1/2008)
