Ursa 2004 Petite Sirah (El Dorado)
-
$22
Fans of this variety will find something really interesting here. While the wine has the bigtime wild berry, chocolate, leather and spice flavors that Petite Sirah so dependably produces, it also boasts alcohol below 14%, giving it welcome balance. With thick, furry tannins, it’s a guaranteed ager, if you like your Pets old.

Ursa 2003 Vineyard Blend Petite Sirah (California)

This blend is from the Foothills, the Central Coast and Lodi, and the wine is very nice. Polished, dry, tannic and rich in fruit, it has unrestrained blackberry, cherry, coffee and chocolate flavors, but maintains balance all the way. What a great short ribs wine.

Ursa 2002 Petite Sirah (Paso Robles)

Raises this variety, which can be excessively tannic and ponderous, to a more interesting level with some well-polished fruit. Opens with a very pretty perfume of blackberry jam, chocolate and cassis, and turns sweetly fruity in the mouth, although it’s very dry. The tannins are still there, but they’re ripe and sweet.

Ursa 2003 Petite Sirah (Paso Robles)

$22
This is a very nice Petite Sirah, rich and soft and dry, although it’s not quite as complex as Ursa’s Sierra Foothills bottling. The cherry, blackberry, cola, leather and raw red meat flavors are forward and ripe, and definitive of the variety.

Ursa 2004 Vineyard Blend Petite Sirah (California)

Pretty good for a Petite Sirah with a statewide appellation. Satisfies for its lush array of flavors and for the way the sturdy tannins and brisk acidity provide a fine framework of balance. Blackberries, cherries, leather, olive tapenade, grilled beef, tamari and white pepper are just a few of the flavors.
