Valdelana 2004 Agnus de Valdelana Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $53
Starts out stewy, with exotic spice aromas that are uncommon but not unpleasant. That unusual spicy character persists throughout, and the feel is chewy and meaty while the fruit veers toward stewed blackberry, nutmeg and anise. A different breed of cat but a good one nonetheless. Drink now.  — M.S.  (4/1/2011)

Valdelana 2003 Agnus Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $25
Sweet and spicy stuff, with plenty of oak-based coconut and butter on the nose. In the mouth, it’s quite saturated and flush, with overt plum, blackberry and wood resin notes. A big, modern wine that’s a bit oafish but also rather easy to drink.  — M.S.  (12/15/2006)

Valdelana 2004 Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $23
Every wine from this house has exotic aromas and flavors that aren’t matched elsewhere, which isn’t to say that Valdelana’s wines offer fool-proof likability. This wine smells funky and tastes of tobacco, butter and cumin. Lean on the finish, but interesting for its unique character, aromas and flavors.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Valdelana 1999 Crianza Red (Rioja)

  1. $11
A straightforward, simple and light wine with dusty old cedar and beet aromas. Strawberry and rhubarb flavors take it to the finish short and simple.  — W.E.  (11/1/2002)

Valdelana 2006 Agnus de Valdelana Crianza Red (Rioja)

  1. $23
Earth, raisin, dried herb and funky, odd oak aromas lead to a grabby, friction-filled palate with sweet-and-sour flavors of raisin, pie cherry and cheese. Finishes resiny and raisiny, with milk chocolate and licorice. A weird wine with a lot of foreign Russian oak character.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Valdelana 2001 Red (Rioja)

  1. $8
The bright purple color and aromas of bubble gum and grape skins shout out “carbonic maceration,” a technique often used to pump up young wines. The flavors are of candied black plum, licorice and sugar. The finish, though, is only thin and tangy. It’s the equivalent of Spanish Beaujolais Nouveau.  — M.S.  (11/1/2002)

Valdelana 2006 Juan de Valdelana Crianza Red (Rioja)

  1. $17
One of the more weird-smelling Riojas out there; it’s oddly spicy, with strained, grainy aromas coming straight from the barrel. The palate is sinewy and tough, with unstructured, baked and herbal flavors of tomato and funky spice. It’s hard to muster much support for this one.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Valdelana 2009 Juan de Valdelana Red (Rioja)

  1. $11
Smells strange, with a mix of unknown spice and odd fruit aromas. The palate is snappy and sharp, with light fruit and oaky, resiny flavors that leave a lasting, confounding aftertaste. Rather pointless given all the good value-priced wines on the market.  — M.S.  (2/1/2011)
