Valley of the Moon

Valley of the Moon Vineyards and Winery is one of the most historic wine producing establishments within the Sonoma Valley. It has been in operation longer than any other winery in the Glen Ellen area with vineyards originally planted in 1863. The Valley of the Moon Winery is housed in a restored stone and redwood winery built in 1887. The most well-known Valley of the Moon vineyard is a block of old vine Zinfandel planted in the 1940s. More recently plantings of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese and Pinot Blanc have been added, all utilizing sustainable farming practices. Of all the Valley of the Moon wines it is their Cuvée de la Luna Bordeaux-inspired blend that typically receives the highest accolades according to our Valley of the Moon ratings. In 1997 the winery was transformed into a contemporary winemaking facility while maintaining the heritage and tradition of its original structure. Check out our Valley of the Moon reviews below to learn more about the winery itself and the portfolio of Valley of the Moon wines.

Valley of the Moon 2008 Cuvee de la Luna Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County)

  1. $30
Mainly Cabernet, with some Merlot and Malbec added for depth and complexity, this rich, dry wine has jammy blackberry, dark chocolate and oak flavors. It’s compromised by sharp acidity that rattles the palate. Drink soon.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)

Here’s a good, everyday red wine, from a winery that specializes in value. It’s full-bodied and rich in black cherry, bacon and pepper flavors that go down soft and easy.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

Valley of the Moon 2010 Pinot Noir (Carneros)

  1. $18
A little too sharp, which gives this thin Pinot Noir a sting. But it’s nice and low in alcohol, with attractive cranberry and cola flavors, and elegant enough to drink with anything calling for Pinot Noir. The price is pretty good for the quality.  — S.H.  (2/1/2012)

Valley of the Moon 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County)

  1. $20
This is what Valley of the Moon does so well—make a varietally true wine with some complexity, and offer it at a mid-priced range. This is not an ager, but it’s balanced and elegant, with modulated blackberry, cassis, cherry and oak flavors that finish dry, tannic and spicy.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)
