Vega Sicilia 2000 Unico Tempranillo Blend (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $450
Like liquid silk, it’s so smooth and supple. Aromas of fresh mountain herbs pour forth from the glass along with the scents of cherry, cough drop and dried spices. Very light on its feet with pronounced elegance as opposed to raw power. The palate is sleek and feminine, with flavors of dried red fruits, raspberry and light medicinality. Spectacular as per usual…  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Vega Sicilia 1994 Unico Gran Reserva Tempranillo Blend (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $325
Who else but Vega holds wines for more than 10 years before their release? This gorgeous Único spent 104 months in large casks and smaller barrels, yet there’s virtually no overt wood. The nose is foresty and complex, with hints of tomato, leather and licorice. Flavors of plum, cherry and vanilla are otherworldly, and there’s enough tobacco to conjure memories of a…  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Vega Sicilia 1998 Unico Tempranillo Blend (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $225
Lovely tobacco, dried fruit, spice and leather create that unique, classy nose that is Vega Sicilia Unico. This may not be the best recent vintage of this high-flying wine (1991 and 1994 were better), but it is still quite impressive. The palate is maturing but shows vitality, and the flavors of cherry, tobacco, cracked spice and roasted plums are sublime and…  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Vega Sicilia 2005 Valbuena Tempranillo Blend (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $190
Opens with classy aromas of lavender, thyme, sage and medicinality, i.e. plum liqueur. Super silky and smooth in the mouth, with velvety tannins and an elegance not found in most of the staunch, powerful wines of the region. Finishes almost creamy, with notes of tobacco, vanilla and cedar. 85% Tempranillo with 15% Merlot and Malbec.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Vega Sicilia 1997 Valbuena Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $90
A wine of exceptional elegance that starts off with delicate floral aromas of violets or lilacs, then folds in black cherries, red raspberries and dried spices. Bright fruit flavors sing on the long finish. No Unico was made in this difficult vintage, so much of the juice that normally goes into Unico was used for this wine, while the wine that is normally Valbuena…  — J.C.  (11/1/2001)

Vega Sicilia 2003 Valbuena 5° Tempranillo Blend (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $188
Valbuena is Vega Sicilia’s so-called second wine, and this vintage is elegant and lithe. To equate it to Burgundian Pinot Noir is not a stretch, seeing that the nose is earthy and dry, with fresh flowers, leather and tobacco aromas. The palate is light and full of finesse, with airy cranberry, earth and cherry flavors. From a poor vintage, this is more than…  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Vega Sicilia 1987 Unico Red (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $200
One of the mysteries of Vega is how a wine released so late can be so fresh and vibrant. The ’87 is no exception, featuring red raspberries and cherries counterbalanced by cedary oak. Focused, lean and dry, this vintage of Unico may turn out to be too elegant for its own good, but the delicately fruity, intricately wrought finish seems to go on and on.  — J.C.  (11/1/2001)
