Lovely tobacco, dried fruit, spice and leather create that unique, classy nose that is Vega Sicilia Unico. This may not be the best recent vintage of this high-flying wine (1991 and 1994 were better), but it is still quite impressive. Vega Sicilia 1987 Unico Red (Ribera del Duero)

One of the mysteries of Vega is how a wine released so late can be so fresh and vibrant. The ’87 is no exception, featuring red raspberries and cherries counterbalanced by cedary oak.
