Venge 2008 Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)
-
$125
An absolute joy and triumph. Just superb, showcasing the best of Oakville. Perfect tannins, as pure as velvet and sweet, and perfect oak, too, with beautifully applied char and wood spice. That the oak is 100% new is in keeping with the wine’s volumetrics. The wine’s flavors are a profound, heady expression of blackberries, blueberries, cassis and dark, barely…

Venge 2009 Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

$135
A massive wine, decadent and splendid, and a worthy followup to the near-perfect 2008. Densely packed in fruit, it explodes in blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, minerals and sweet, toasty new oak. That richness is lifted to brilliance by the tannic structure, which is world class. So deliciously approachable, it’s drinkable now, but it should develop over the…

Venge 2009 Bone Ash Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)
-
$80
Venge’s superb 2008 Bone Ash was a tough act to follow, but this 2009 pulls it off. Made entirely from Cabernet and aged for nearly two years in mostly new French oak, it shows massively rich flavors of blackberries, cassis and sweet buttered toast, with a lush, smooth mouthfeel, courtesy of ripe, sweet tannins. So easy to like, and an ideal partner to a perfectly…

Venge 2008 Bone Ash Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)
-
$76
A beautiful, brilliant but immature Cabernet. It’s massively rich in blackberry and cherry pie filling, cassis, dark chocolate and fine, smoky oak flavors, wrapped into thick but fine, sweet tannins. Shows elegance and finesse despite the power, but needs time. Best after 2014.

Venge 1997 Reserve Merlot (Napa Valley)
-
$35
A 100% Merlot that’s inky dark. An opulent wine of almost inscrutable complexity. Delivers tiers of plum, tobacco, blackberry, violet, oak and smoke. Tastes dense and concentrated, but the tannins are so softly lush, you can drink it now. Very serious Merlot.

Venge 2005 Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)
-
$125
Has the feel of an important, but young, Cabernet, with its impressive structure and near-perfectly ripened fruit. The flavors of black currants, plums, minerals and cedar are wrapped in gorgeously ripe, refined tannins, and balanced with fine acidity. Good now, and should hold and improve for at least six years in the bottle.

Venge 2006 Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

$125
Soft and juicy, and very smooth in texture, with delicious blackberry, black currant, cherry and mocha flavors. Made even more complex by smoky oak and a note of roasted meat. Drinkable now, but should hold well for 4–6 years, at least.
