This is one of the best $10 Cabs ever. It has a depth and complexity of tannins and acids that almost guarantee improvement in the bottle. Dry, rich and stylish, its a smooth, voluptuous wine, despite a certain thinness of fruit. The overlay of oak is gorgeous.

An interesting wine, with a rich tobacco and clove streak that’s distinctive. There are underlying flavors of blackberries and chocolate, and the acidity is just right. It has depth and substance, which are rare at this price. Try pulling this one out and serving it to your wine snob neighbor, blind.

Spicy and dusty smelling, with full-force plum and berry aromas matched by equally potent smoky barrel scents. Thorough in feel, with vivid, oak-accented flavors of wild berry and plum. Round and full on the finish, with lasting resiny flavors that remain after all else has faded away.

Veramonte 2006 Primus Red (Colchagua Valley)

Lightly herbal but also showing quality berry, cassis, grilled meat and a light, leafy accent. Bordeaux-like in style, with ripe berry and plum flavors along with a dose of herbs. Confident, controlled wine that doesn’t overdo it. One of the best, if not the best, Primus we’ve tried. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Carmenère.

Veramonte 2011 Ritual Sauvignon Blanc (Casablanca Valley)

Veramonte’s first high-end Ritual Sauvignon is a big success. The nose is mellow, refined and minerally as opposed to pungent and feline. The feel is fresh, clean as a razor, and easygoing, with lime, nectarine and passion fruit flavors. Long and lightly green on the classy finish.

Veramonte 2002 Single Vineyard Merlot (Casablanca Valley)

Even after 14 months in French oak, this wine shows a lot of fruit. Black cherries abound on the nose and palate, accented by mocha, dried spices and a just a hint of herbaceousness. The plush mouthfeel ends in a velvety, herbally complex finish.

Veramonte 2001 Primus Red (Casablanca Valley)

Deep, with a zesty nose that’s a bit sharp. Flavors of cherry, cassis and toast are round and ripe, as are the tannins and finish. For a Casablanca red, one that mixes Carmenère with Merlot and Cabernet, it’s on the spot. Best Primus to date?
