Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 1988 Rare Vintage Brut Sparkling (Champagne)

One of Veuve Clicquot’s library releases, this wine is now wonderfully mature with layer upon layer of toast, spice, roasted almonds and roundness. As it has developed, it has also grown so rich that it is much closer to Burgundy than Champagne. The acidity of Champagne and that lift in the mouth show its true origins.  — R.V.  (12/1/2008)

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 2002 Vintage Brut Sparkling (Champagne)

A wine that shows an airy character. It is very open and fresh, the white fruits floating over a creamy texture and made crisp by grapefruit skin and bitter orange flavors. But it is just beginning to develop its potential, and the wine will likely fill out, as secondary flavors come through over the next 5–6 years.  — R.V.  (12/1/2008)

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 1985 Rare Vintage Rosé Brut Sparkling (Champagne)

Mature yes, but definitely not old. This wine is at its peak now, the fruit still amazingly fresh, but given wonderful complexity by toast, spice and almonds There is an intense acidity that leaves a mouthful of liveliness alongside the great depth of flavor.  — R.V.  (12/1/2008)

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 1985 Brut Rosé Sparkling (Champagne)

  1. $250
Tasted from a magnum disgorged in ’97, this provides ample evidence that ’85 was a great year for Clicquot. Toasty, but seems less evolved than the ’85 Brut, with a deep copper color, meaty, savory aromas, berry flavors and a full, creamy texture. Long on the finish. It’s made from the same base as the ’85 Brut, but with 14.5% red from Bouzy added.  — W.E.  (12/1/2005)

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 1996 La Grande Dame Brut Sparkling (Champagne)

  1. $180
Selected from the eight grand cru villages in which Madame owned vineyards, this lean, youthful wine is delicious now but could use additional bottle age to broaden out. Toasty and citrusy, there’s a lot of fruit here, yet it retains a great sense of elegance.  — W.E.  (12/1/2005)

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 1995 La Grande Dame Brut Rosé Sparkling (Champagne)

  1. $230
The lovely salmon color and delicate bead make a strong first impression, and this wine doesn't disappoint either on the nose or the palate. Intense yet elegant aromas of toast are followed by hints of vanilla, tropical fruit and milk chocolate, while the flavors turn meatier. Full-bodied and lush in the mouth, with a lingering finish.  — J.C.  (12/1/2004)

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin 1998 La Grande Dame Brut Sparkling (Champagne)

  1. $120
A superbly ripe Champagne that has all the open generosity of the 1998 vintage. Peach and apricot aromas are followed by flavors of hazelnuts, honey and spices. Of course, it is still very young, and, like all vintages of La Grande Dame, it will age for many years.  — R.V.  (11/1/2006)
