Viberti 2006 Rocchettevino Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  • Online Exclusive
Here’s a super-modern, piacione (roughly translated from the Italian as “no one can resist it”) wine with deep layers of vanilla, toast, roasted espresso bean, blackberry, balsam notes, smoke, spice and tar. The wine is thick and soft in the mouth and almost ready to drink now (or in five years). The finish is delicious with a long cherry-flavored fade.  — M.L.  (12/1/2010)

Viberti 2007 Rocchettevino Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  1. $75
This is a terrific Barolo with cooling berry nuances backed by fresh menthol and cola-like aromas that give it a lively, buoyant personality. On the palate, it feels crisp and compact and what it lacks in weight, it makes up for in intensity.  — M.L.  (9/1/2011)

Viberti 2003 Riserva Bricco delle Viole Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  1. $75
This Riserva Barolo offers a unique perspective on the Nebbiolo grape. There’s a ton of natural spice in this expression but it’s not the obvious vanilla and clove. Instead, this wine delivers dried currant, licorice, anise, earth and sweet cherry. It has a round, velvety feel and a soft finish. It’s ready to drink now or could age more.  — M.L.  (4/1/2009)

Viberti 2003 Riserva San Pietro Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  1. $75
Barolo Riserva San Pietro reflects the heat of the 2003 vintage with confidence and personality. There’s a good balance between fruit and spice here and mature cherry aromas help elevate the whole thing up a few notches in intensity. The wine is compact and clean with firm, drying tannins.  — M.L.  (4/1/2009)

Viberti 1999 Buon Padre Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $42
This tannic Barolo needs another 10 years to show its stuff. Right now it’s hiding its plum and cherry fruit behind a wall of mouth-drying tannins, and the nose exhibits a bit of funk that also needs time to resolve. Try in 2015.  — J.C.  (11/15/2004)

Viberti 2004 Buon Padre Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $55
Barolo Buon Padre (“good father”) is a wine that walks in delicate steps, rather than in leaps and bounds. This is a good thing, because the slow pace allows you to savor its lingering tones of cherry cola, licorice, jasmine and dried flower. The only distraction is a persistent tea-like aroma that develops into full-on Irish breakfast tea as the wine takes in more…  — M.L.  (4/1/2009)

Viberti 1998 Buon Padre Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  1. $42
Starts off shaky, with burnt matchstick and slightly herbal aromas. Yet it recovers nicely with air, losing the offending scents and developing lovely black cherry and hickory notes. Medium- to full-bodied, it boasts a creamy texture and dry, tea-like tannins on the finish. Drink 2010–2015.  — W.E.  (4/2/2004)

Viberti 2001 Toni 'D Giuspin Dolcetto (Dolcetto d'Alba)

  1. $21
Muscular and meaty up front, with enough barnyard, earth and leather to qualify as rustic. Things turn more peppy and perky in the mouth, where tight red fruit takes over. A firm and tight finish is wholly expected and it arrives, confirming the wine’s concrete structure.  — M.S.  (12/15/2003)
