Vie Winery 2004 Last Leg Cuvee Red (North Coast)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
In an era of extravagant, extracted reds that overwhelm food, this is elegantly sophisticated and complex. Bone dry, it has a rich earthiness and balance that’s almost Bordeaux-like. A blend of Syrah, Zin and Petite Sirah.  — S.H.  (2/1/2007)

Vie Winery 2005 Las Madres Vineyard Syrah (Carneros)

  1. $39
Very nice, complex Syrah, soft and a little melted in structure, but with such luscious fruit, you have to like it. The ripe blackberry, raspberry and blueberry liqueur flavors have a rich edge of anisette-dipped biscotti. Drink now through 2009.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)

Vie Winery 2005 L'Intruse Mourvèdre (Santa Barbara County)

  1. $39
Made from a warmer inland area, and blended with some Syrah and Grenache, this is a soft, fruity wine that offers immediate pleasure. It floods the mouth with blackberry, cherry, chocolate, leather and coffee flavors that finish in a sprinkling of cinnamon, white pepper and nutmeg.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)

Vie Winery 2005 Les Amours Syrah (Santa Barbara County)

  1. $45
Soft and fairly one-dimensional, this Syrah has the taste of perfectly ripened blackberries and black raspberries, crushed and seasoned with cocoa, white pepper and powerded anise. It has 20% Mourvèdre, which seems to bring a slight gaminess.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)

Vie Winery 2004 Beatty Ranch Vineyard Zinfandel (Howell Mountain)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $38
The 15.9% alcohol is the price you pay for dryness. The wine shows a nice Howell Mountain quality in the hugely ripe fruit and perfectly sculpted tannins that feel so lush and smooth in the mouth. It’s beautiful, in its way, but that alcohol is really challenging.  — S.H.  (3/1/2007)

Vie Winery 2005 Belle-Amie Rosé (Santa Barbara County)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
Tastes overtly sweet, with sugary raspberry and cherry candy flavors. It’s a tasty country wine, but not really dry. Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)

Vie Winery 2004 Las Madres Vineyard Syrah (Carneros)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $38
There’s a rusticity here, a sharpness of texture, that interferes with the otherwise delicious blackberry, plum, coffee, balsamic, soy and spice flavors. Texture is so important in a wine like this. Disregard it, and no amount of ripeness can compensate.  — S.H.  (2/1/2007)

Vie Winery 2005 L'Imaginaire Grenache (Santa Barbara County)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $39
Not a whole lot going on in this soft, simple wine. The cherry, raspberry and root beer flavors are ultraripe, with a liqueured quality, and the finish is semisweet.  — S.H.  (12/1/2007)
