The Brunate cru with its excellent exposure and thicker soils is usually known for its hearty, deeply concentrated wines. Instead, here we find an elegant almost feminine expression with pretty nuances of vanilla, forest berry and dried violets. It certainly does not lack power or concentration, and the delivery is subtle and nuanced.

Vietti 2007 Lazzarito Nebbiolo (Barolo)

This is a delicious wine on all levels. Lazzarito opens in a bold, masculine style with overtones of ripe cherry fruit, leather and cured beef jerky. The wine then segues to soft, textured tannins with power and extra length on the close. It’s impossible not to fall in love with a wine of this caliber.

Lazzarito is an outstanding achievement and a wonderful example of the staying power of Barolo. The wine is redolent of sweet spice, clove, smoked bacon, licorice and roasted almond—in fact, it’s almost too much of a good thing. There are deep layers here and the wine boasts a soft velvety feel. Drink 2015–2020.

Vietti 1996 Villero Riserva Nebbiolo (Piedmont)

With its sweet dried fruits on the nose, and solid, almost dusty tannins and wood flavors, it has repaid the extra wood aging. The wine is only released six years after harvest and produced in small quantities.
