Vigneti Villabella 2004 Fracastoro Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $60
Coffee, tar, licorice and plump red fruit give this Amarone the density and staying power to pair with steak Roquefort with mushrooms and black pepper. There’s a round, succulent quality here that is reinforced by inky, dark concentration.  — M.L.  (12/1/2011)

Vigneti Villabella 2005 Red (Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso)

The appearance here is beautiful: thick and brooding with dark garnet highlights. The nose is immediately attractive thanks to its sweet tones of cherry, cinnamon and clove and the mouthfeel is exceedingly plush and rich.  — M.L.  (10/1/2009)

Vigneti Villabella 2001 Fracastoro Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $57
Ripe fruit tones of strawberry jam and blackberry preserve open the wine and are followed by older tones of used leather and Indian spicebox. The wine is soft and chewy in the mouth with a succulent finish.  — M.L.  (12/1/2009)

  1. $45
This is a more compact and elegant expression of Amarone that lets the quality of its ripe fruit shine through. You’ll recognize tones of cherry and cassis. But there are also balanced mineral, almond and spice notes at the back. The mouthfeel is bright, focused and persistent.  — M.L.  (2/1/2011)

Vigneti Villabella 2001 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $38
This is one of the most fruit-forward Amarones I have tasted from this vintage. The concentration and extraction is very good and the nose is richly redolent of plump black cherry, plum, blackberry and blueberry supported by shadings of chocolate, tar and caramel. Creamy succulence and a long, drying finish characterize the mouthfeel. Imported by Wine Wave.  — M.L.  (12/1/2007)

Vigneti Villabella 2000 Fracastoro Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $47
This is a densely concentrated wine with lush and traditional notes of apple-cherry, cherry liquor, black chocolate and spice cake. What you notice most in the mouth is the wine’s almost excessive sweetness that is well framed within a context of firm tannins and good length. Imported by Wine Wave.  — M.L.  (12/1/2007)

Vigneti Villabella 2006 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $45
There’s a slightly muddled quality to the bouquet of this Amarone that recalls mixed spice, berry confiture and chewy chocolate-hazelnut treats. The wine shows medium density and intensity on the close that ultimately makes it easier to pair with home-cooked foods like lasagna and meatloaf.  — M.L.  (12/1/2011)

Vigneti Villabella 2006 Red (Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso)

  1. $18
Aged in large oak casks, this dark and thickly extracted Ripasso does a nice job of integrating mature black fruit aromas with spice and tobacco. The oak element is nicely tucked in the background and the wine shows bright fruit flavors in the mouth as well.  — M.L.  (2/1/2011)
