Villa Maria 2001 Clifford Bay Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $29
Opens with a powerful explosion of lime, grass, gooseberry and apple aromas. In the mouth, it shows the fantastic concentration and extraction of an atom bomb, yet it’s balanced, complex and harmonious. It’s quite dry, with extraordinarily high acidity.  — S.H.  (11/15/2002)

Villa Maria 2007 Clifford Bay Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $31
Nearly always one of New Zealand’s top Sauvignons, this wine makes a big, bold statement. Aromas are herbal and leafy, with undertones of tomato and nettles, but buffered by gooseberries and minerality. It’s rich and weighty on the palate, with a creamy texture that brings ripe stone fruit flavors to the fore. Long and mouthcoating on the finish.  — J.C.  (7/1/2008)

Villa Maria 2006 Clifford Bay Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $27
This is supremely perfumed, almost pungent in its intensity, with plenty of presence on the palate and bold flavors of peach, pineapple and complex layers of herbaceousness. Despite its power and weight, it remains surprisingly elegant on the long finish.  — W.E.  (7/1/2007)

Villa Maria 2005 Waikahu Vineyard Chardonnay (Hawke's Bay)

  1. $35
Villa Maria’s single-vineyard wines are usuallly incredibly expressive, and this flashy Chardonnay from Hawke’s Bay is no exception. Bold nectarine and citrus notes are skillfully framed by toasty oak. There’s a woody wallop here, but also plenty of fruit, and rather than being heavy, it finishes long and fresh. Delicious now, so there’s no need to defer gratification.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Villa Maria 2006 Taylors Pass Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough)

  1. $32
This is a wonderfully expressive NZ SAuvignon Blanc, oozing with tropical fruit, but with greenish overtones of fresh herbs and tomato leaves. Bold passion fruit rules the nose, with the herbal notes providing balance. Medium- to full-bodied, with a long finish, this should drink well over the next year or so.  — J.C.  (11/1/2007)

Villa Maria 2006 Taylors Pass Single Vineyard Pinot Noir (Marlborough)

  1. $50
In the Villa Maria style, this is an amply endowed Pinot Noir, but it also shows excellent balance—the dark plum and cola fruit is matched in intensity by crisp acids and firm tannins, suggesting a few years in the cellar wouldn’t hurt. Drink 2010–2016.  — J.C.  (12/1/2008)
