Villa Mt. Eden 2001 Bien Nacido Vineyard Signature Chardonnay (Santa Maria Valley)

  1. $32
Santa Barbara seems to produce these exquisitely layered Chardonnays so effortlessly. The cool coastal climate has preserved vital acids, while a long growing season allowed the most extraordinary tropical fruit flavors to develop. Finally, there are the rich, creamy influences from oak and lees. This four-year-old wine shows no sign at all of age.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Villa Mt. Eden 2002 Grand Reserve Mead Ranch Vineyard Zinfandel (Napa Valley)

  1. $22
When they talk about claret-like Zins, they have this one in mind. It has the effortlessly controlled balance, the smooth tannins of a fine Napa Cab, but never loses Zin’s peppery, wild, fresh-from-the-forest personality, or zesty acidity. This is Zin at a very high level of expression.  — S.H.  (12/1/2005)

Villa Mt. Eden 1999 Grand Reserve Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

  1. $21
Boy this is good stuff. Starts with those big, rich, sappy Pinot aromas of dark berry marmalade and dark chocolate and turns velvety smooth on the palate. There’s a ton of rich, ripe fruit in the middle, and the dry, spicy finish is full of flavor. Yet it’s dry, light and elegant—a candlelight wine.  — S.H.  (12/15/2001)

Villa Mt. Eden 1995 Grand Reserve Monte Rosso Vine Zinfandel (Sonoma Valley)

  1. $20
From a great vintage and a great vineyard. Powerful aromas of raspberry, blackberry, tobacco, mint, bark, smoke, spice. Tastes as good as it sounds. Dry, racy, clean, beautiful tannin structure. A terrific wine.  — S.H.  (9/1/1999)

Villa Mt. Eden 1999 Fox Creek Vyd Grand Reserve Zinfandel (Sierra Foothills)

  1. $21
Dark and rich; color stains the side of the glass on this highly extracted wine. It's full-bodied with powerful berry and spice flavors, but it's so well structured that it seems as elegant as Bordeaux. Really shows the heights to which Sierra Zin can rise.  — S.H.  (12/15/2001)

Villa Mt. Eden 1996 Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $20
Dark color. Classic Cab aromas of cassis, elaborate oak, anise and mint. In other words, very complex and high-class. Tastes as good as it smells, delivering tiers of fruit, spice and earthy tobacco flavors. Lush tannins indicate ageability.  — W.E.  (2/1/2000)

Villa Mt. Eden 2004 Grand Reserve Antique Vines Zinfandel (Napa-Amador)

  1. $16
This two-region Zin is from Atlas Peak and Amador County. It shows a really great Zin quality in the leathery spiciness that accompanies the berry flavors, and in the smooth, polished tannins. Amador seems to bring wildness, while Napa brings elegance. The result is a great Zinfandel at a great price.  — S.H.  (3/1/2008)

Villa Mt. Eden 2002 Bien Nacido Vineyard Grand Reserve Chardonnay (Santa Maria Valley)

  1. $15
This is not a bad price for such a good wine, from such a pedigreed vineyard. It’s classic cool South Coast, with a crisp spine of citrusy acids that brighten the tropical fruit flavors. This is a generous, fat wine that offers lots of pleasure.  — S.H.  (6/1/2004)
