Pale gold in color, with a fairly pronounced nose of orange citrus rind, dried herbs, pear drops and lime sherbet. Medium sweet and fruity, not terribly complex but nicely juicy and well balanced with an attractive spicy kick on the finish. Youthful, refreshing and easy-drinking.  — W.E.  (3/1/2011)

Pale to mid-gold in color with a heady nose of exotic spice, rose water and floral blossoms with a hint of smoke. Round and warming on the palate. Villa Wolf 2007 Trocken Riesling (Pfalz)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Light, delicate and dry, this shows Ernie Loosen’s Mosel touch. Lime, peach and melon notes add airy nuances over the underlying briny minerality of the Pfalz. Finishes long and slightly peppery-spicy.  — J.C.  (6/1/2009)

Pale ruby color. Predominantly earthy savory aromas with hints of baked red fruit. Medium bodied, slightly chunky and rustic, with grippy tannins, but ample flavors of ripe red fruits and earthy minerality. Fairly long finish.  — W.E.  (3/1/2011)

Villa Wolf 2007 Pinot Gris (Pfalz)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Villa Wolf, Ernst Loosen’s Pfalz venture, had several hits in 2007, including this medium-bodied, dry Pinot Gris. Orange and tangerine notes marry easily on the palate with stony notes of crushed rock. Falls somewhere between Alsace and Italy in style and weight—an attractive combination at a realistic price.  — J.C.  (6/1/2009)

Villa Wolf 2007 Silvaner (Pfalz)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Silvaners rarely boast this kind of charm and forward fruit. This one combines apple and citrus notes into a round yet crisp package with overtones of pineapple. This should make a refreshing summer sipper.  — J.C.  (6/1/2009)

Villa Wolf 2006 Gewürztraminer (Pfalz)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Varietally correct scents of rose petals and spice burst from the glass, followed by pear and melon fruit. It’s all backed by acidity that’s fairly crisp for Gewürztraminer and relatively modest residual sugar. The only quibble is the relatively quick fade on the finish.  — J.C.  (11/15/2007)

Villa Wolf 2009 Dry Riesling (Pfalz)

  1. $12
Part of Dr. Loosen’s stable, this is a reasonably dry Riesling at a reasonable price. Petrichor and grapefruit lead the way, with hints of riper citrus fruits helping to round out the midpalate. Ends on notes of anise, crushed stone and citrus.  — J.C.  (3/1/2011)
