Villa Wolf, Ernst Loosen’s Pfalz venture, had several hits in 2007, including this medium-bodied, dry Pinot Gris. Orange and tangerine notes marry easily on the palate with stony notes of crushed rock. Falls somewhere between Alsace and Italy in style and weight—an attractive combination at a realistic price.

Varietally correct scents of rose petals and spice burst from the glass, followed by pear and melon fruit. It’s all backed by acidity that’s fairly crisp for Gewürztraminer and relatively modest residual sugar. The only quibble is the relatively quick fade on the finish.

Part of Dr. Loosen’s stable, this is a reasonably dry Riesling at a reasonable price. Petrichor and grapefruit lead the way, with hints of riper citrus fruits helping to round out the midpalate. Ends on notes of anise, crushed stone and citrus.
