Viña La Rosa 2008 La Capitana Barrel Reserve Carmenère (Cachapoal Valley)
-
$17
Big, roasted and concentrated, with mocha, black fruit and cola on the nose. The palate is chewy but right for the variety, and the flavors are sweet, pure and tilt toward black plum and blackberry. Chocolaty on the finish, with density and meatiness. A good vehicle for getting to know Carmenère.

Viña La Rosa 2004 Ossa Red (Cachapoal Valley)
-
$75
La Rosa’s first-ever prestige wine is a burly blend of Cab Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah and Cab Franc. There’s a deep color to it, with coconut, mint and pencil shaving aromas giving way to sweet, chocolaty, dark-fruit flavors. The 30% Carmenère in the blend is evident in the herbal, leathery notes on the finish.

Viña La Rosa 2009 Cornellana Barrel Reserve Carmenère (Cachapoal Valley)
-
$18
Dark, deep and layered on the bouquet, with spice, black fruit aromas and an acceptable level of herbs that don’t suggest green in any way. Lush and cushioned in the mouth, with chewy flavors of herbal blackberry, tobacco and savory broth. Finishes big and chocolaty, with smoke and spice.

Viña La Rosa 2009 La Capitana Barrel Reserve Carmenère (Cachapoal Valley)
The bouquet is elegant and restrained for the variety, with lead pencil, lemony notes, dark cherry and blackberry aromas. Feels lively and textured, with racy acidity setting up flavors of tobacco, coffee, chocolate, herbs and blackberry. Saucy on the finish, with menthol.

Viña La Rosa 2004 Don Reca Limited Release Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon (Cachapoal Valley)
-
$20
At 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet, this signature blend from La Rosa exhibits touches of green on the nose but mostly deep black fruit. The palate runs thick and sticky courtesy of extract and tannin, however, the flavors of plum, chocolate and bacon are satisfying. Quite a big, meaty red. Powerful if a bit clumsy.
