Crusty, dark and big all over; this is a full, minerally Syrah with molten intensity and floral accents. The palate is broad, round and loaded with toasty, spicy plum and other black-fruit flavors. The finish is warm and chocolaty, and as a whole it’s delivering a lot more depth and quality than most $14 wines.

Here’s yet another very nice, ready-to-drink Cabernet from Chile. Tight and complete on the nose, with aromas of cassis, cherry and tar. The palate is packed deep with sweet cassis fruit, which is accented by tobacco and burnt sugar. Shows some unabsorbed oak and chocolate on the finish, but generally speaking it’s in fine shape.

Rich and sweet smelling right from the start, with mocha, shoe polish and charred aromas. The wine is ripe to the point of being sticky, while the flavors are naturally herbal, with olive, berry and earth notes. Shows good balance, feel and nerve. A new and worthy Carmenère to keep an eye on.

A little candied and jumpy on the nose, with floral, grapey aromas. The palate is wide and stocky, with grabby tannins that turn the flavors of bold berry and plum a bit thick. Fruity and extracted on the finish; good wine but needs some refinement to match the big size.

Jammy red-berry aromas come with a green streak. The wine is a bit hard in feel, with choppy tannins. Sweet blueberry and graham cracker flavors are offset by saline and green accents, while the finish is chunky and earthy.
