This is a sturdy, earthy, firmly compact wine with a spine of steel. It keeps the fruit front and center, with a concentrated middle mixing raspberry, cherry and strawberry jam. Yet there is more here than sweet fruit, and as it breathes in come layers of spice, cola and rock.

A standout Pinot, expressive from the first sniff to the last swallow. Elegant and precise, with deep notes of black cherry fruit, set into a balanced framework of tannin and acid. Barrel notes of coffee and cinnamon are expressive and beautifully integrated.

Sharp and precise, this opens with intense scents of raspberry and summer strawberries, beautifully aromatic. The fruit loads the palate with bright, fresh flavors that go deep and last into a very satisfying finish. Young as it is, it will be difficult to keep your hands off this bottle. But it will reward cellaring over the next 6–8 years.

This wine was made at Le Cadeau, from Vista Hills grapes, and is the star of the 2009s. An excellent, racy structure provides the scaffolding around a refined, lightly spiced Pinot Noir with crisp raspberry and cherry fruit.

Oregon Pinot Gris doesn’t get more fresh and refreshing than this zippy number from Vista Hills. With alcohol at just 13.2%, it is truly food-friendly, with elegant and light herbal notes across fresh apple and pear.

The estate Pinot Gris from Vista Hills shows a streak of pine resin that enlivens the naturally juicy pear and gooseberry fruit. It’s spicy and strong, crisp and clean— just right for a pesto dish.

Another fine estate-grown Pinot Gris from Vista Hills, with plenty of green apple and Bosch pear fruit, along with some light cinnamon spice. There is also a suggestion of flower in both the nose and the mouth, but overall it’s a bigger wine than that, with the fruit front and center.

There is a meaty undercurrent to this reserve Pinot Noir from a neighboring (non-estate) vineyard; a sense of blood and fat just below the tart, spicy red fruits. All of the 2007 Pinots from Vista Hills have the restraint and elegance to reveal some added dimensions. This runs the gamut from watermelon to raspberry to black cherry, with excellent concentration and depth.
