Viu Manent

Family owned since 1935, Chile’s Viu Manent produces a broad selection of wines, ranging from its value-driven Rayuela and Secreto de Viu Manent lines to its higher-end bottlings of Viu 1, ViBo and El Incidente. Malbec is the primarily variety used to produce the Viu 1 and ViBo wines, while El Incidente is a red blend led by Carmenère and filled out with Malbec and Petit Verdot. These three selections are rated among the highest in our Viu Manent reviews. Other varieties used by Viu Manent include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah. An advocate of sustainability, Viu Manent uses eco-friendly winemaking practices to limit its carbon footprint. For more information on this winery, visit our Viu Manent Wine Reviews.

Viu Manent 1999 Viu I Malbec (Colchagua Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $39
This is 90% old-vine Malbec with 10% Cabernet thrown in. The best one-word description is “awesome.” The 80-year-old Malbecvines is full of clove, licorice and marzipan nuances. The flavor profile offers berries, sweetmeat pie and maple syrup. The finish is huge but soft. The body is massive and concentrated, but entirely friendly. This is indeed a super Chilean in…  — M.S.  (3/1/2002)

Viu Manent 2005 Viu 1 Malbec (Colchagua Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $65
What a lush and spectacular New World Malbec. Buttery aromas of coconut and black fruits mix with herbs, mineral and char to create a near-perfect bouquet. The palate is saturated and balanced by great natural acidity, which frames the blackberry and herb flavors in excellent light. Meaty, textured, fruity and balanced: What more could you want? Drink now–2010…  — M.S.  (7/1/2008)

Viu Manent 2005 Single Vineyard San Carlos Estate Malbec (Colchagua Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $22
This score for a $22 Chilean Malbec may cause you to do a double-take, but this is really a great wine. The nose is chock full of berry aromas with earth and leather riding shotgun. Flavors and finishing notes of chocolate truffles, espresso, berry syrup and mocha sum it up. The structure is here, as is the core acidity. This wine has everything. Viu Manent 2004 Viu 1 Malbec (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $50
Typically this ranks as the best Malbec in Chile, and the 2004 keeps things going in the right direction. The bouquet is manly, tight, oaky and full of monstrous black fruit. Licorice, blackberry pie and espresso are your key flavors, while the feel is dense but assuringly friendly. Drink from 2008 through 2012. Imported by Atlanta Improvement Co.  — M.S.  (11/15/2007)

Viu Manent 2006 Single Vineyard La Capilla Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $25
Is this the best Cabernet that Viu Manent has ever bottled? We think it very well might be; the wine is midnight madness, meaning it’s dark as night and richly draped with blackberry, cassis, black plum and overall lushness. It’s a hulk of a wine, with jammy fruit, fine tannic structure and handsome shadings. Drinkable now and probably better over the next two or…  — M.S.  (5/1/2009)

Viu Manent 2006 Viu 1 Malbec (Colchagua Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $75
Still our favorite Malbec from Chile, Viu 1 rises above the rest due to its pedal-to-the-metal combination of fruit, perfect oak and human attention. The bouquet here is deep and sultry, with oily black fruit and toasty aromas working a perfect pas de deux. The black plum, blackberry and leather flavors hit the spot courtesy of proper acidity and tannins, and the…  — M.S.  (7/1/2009)

Viu Manent 2001 Viu 1 Malbec (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $50
The second version of this world-class Chilean Malbec (with some Cabernet blended in) is on a par with the inaugural ’99. If you like a rich, fully oaked, corpulent red, one with ripe plum and berry fruit, oozing chocolate, and just enough spice to ward away boredom, this is it. Needs another year or so in bottle.  — M.S.  (12/1/2003)

Viu Manent 2003 Viu 1 Red (Colchagua Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
A wine that’s made only in top years, Viu 1 represents the best that Chile can do with Malbec. It’s an old-vines heavyweight with a purple color, sweet coconut-tinged aromas, and luscious black cherry and baked plum flavors. It’s rich, heady and wide. Moderately tannic but not so much that you can’t drink it now. Imported by multiple importers.  — M.S.  (7/1/2006)
