Von Othegraven 2004 Kanzem Altenberg Eiswein First Growth Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $250
Words hardly do this wine justice. It’s unctuous almost beyond the point of being wine—offering a mèlange of dried fruits and honey that ooze over every taste bud, filling the pores of your mouth and then releasing sugar and flavor for minutes afterward. And the aromas aren’t too shabby either, giving up intense scents of dried apricots and orange marmalade, tinged…  — J.C.  (9/1/2006)

Von Othegraven 1999 Kanzemer Altenberg Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
The juice here comes from old vines from the steepest portion of the Altenberg slope. Still quite young, showing a hint of diesel with some botrytis as well. Clean, slatey, unbelievably intense bouquet with dense floral, citrus rind, and mineral scents. The fruit is ripe, full, perfectly harmonious and long. It finishes with just a kiss of honey. Delicious right…  — W.E.  (8/1/2001)

Von Othegraven 2004 Kanzem Altenberg Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $55
This is a knockout, from the floral and apricot-laced aromas right through the lingering notes of honey and fruit. It’s rich and unctuous on the palate, balancing its considerable residual sugar with only 7% alcohol and crisp, mouthwatering acids. Blends a mélange of fruit—apricots, peaches, pears and apples—with nuances of spice and mineral that no other country…  — J.C.  (5/1/2006)

Von Othegraven 2005 Kanzem Altenberg Alte Reben Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $61
Wonderfully balanced and fine, with classic honey, bergamot and dried pineapple aromas that aren’t overpowering. This is on the elegant side, blending sweet honey and candied pineapple flavors with zesty citrus fruit for balance. Exquisitely long on the finish, where the balance and elegance become even more apparent. Drink now–2030.  — J.C.  (10/1/2007)

Von Othegraven 2001 Kanzemer Altenberg QbA Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $27
Tight at first, the aromas gradually open up to offer delicate floral notes, green apples and limes. It’s light and elegant but intensely flavored at the same time; green flowershop nuances with a firm underpinning of steely green apples and citrus. The explosive finish brings waves of minerals and bracing acidity. Editors’ Choice. —J.C.  — J.C.  (3/1/2003)

Von Othegraven 2001 Maria v. O. Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
This must be the best way to experience Saar Riesling on a budget. The high-strung acidity, a sense of nervosité, as the French would say, epitomizes the balancing act performed by estates in this coldest of German growing regions. Apple and pineapple flavors race along the edge of mouthwatering acids. Best Buy. —J.C.  — J.C.  (3/1/2003)

Von Othegraven 2001 Ockfen Bockstein Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $25
Like slices of fresh-cut Macintosh at first, but then folds in lime and mineral notes. Tart, zesty limes and powdered minerals are packed together in a refreshing wine that tastes almost dry. —J.C.  — J.C.  (3/1/2003)

Von Othegraven 2001 Kanzemer Altenberg Auslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $32
In 15 years, this will still be an amazing wine. Currently young, meaty yeasty aromas, mask a rich, full flavored fruit, with fine, fresh flavors of ripe apples. There is a fine balance between acidity and sweetness. —R.V.  — R.V.  (3/1/2003)
