Crisp yet smooth and velvety on the palate, this complex, elegant wine is loaded with layers of pear, apple, mineral, vanilla, coconut, spice, apricot and lemon notes. Really gorgeous, with a finish that is clean and luxurious. —J.M.

A very beautiful, intricate and complex Cabernet, but one that needs time in the cellar. The balance is beyond question. The heart of black currants subtlely tinged with mushu plum sauce and tar, is delicious. The oak is smoky and fine. But the tannins are fierce. Don’t touch it before 2012.

A big, vital, 100% Cabernet from a mountain known for cellar-worthy reds. Strikes you right away with sheer deliciousness, offering potent blackberry, cherry, violet and chocolate flavors that are enhanced with sweetly smoked oak. Yet it has the tannic structure and inherent balance to improve in the bottle over the next 6-10 years.

A brilliant wine that shows the world how delicious young Napa Valley Cabernet can be. Just dazzles with the richness and purity of blackberry, mocha, leather and cedar flavors, with a finish you can measure in minutes. Bordeaux yearns for such ripeness. Terrific now and through 2015.

A big, hard, dry Cabernet whose mountain tannins need quite some time to resolve. Right now they’re tough as nails, although the blackberry fruit is so brilliant and intense, it punches right through. Give this dramatic wine at least six years, and it could well develop beyond the next decade.

A gorgeous Cabernet, elaborately rich in blackberry, cherry, cassis and sweet vanilla oak flavors, yet the finish is thoroughly dry. Those famous Diamond Mountain tannins are firm, but sweetly ripe and elegant. Impressive, and drinkable now for sheer lusciousness, but should develop over the next eight years.

A near replica of the ’07, which was a fabulous wine that required cellaring. So does this ’08. It’s layered and complex in deep, black and blue berry and fruit essence, especially the ripest blackberries, yet with tantalizing hints of earth, minerals and the green olive note you often find in the best cool-climate Cabernets. The tannins are young and profound…

Very pure in blackberries and black currants, this expresses the classic taste of Cabernet Sauvignon. New oak adds a lovely veneer of smoky, cedary cigar box. It’s beautiful to drink now for the soft, velvety texture and appealingly sweet complexity, but should age gradually for many years.
