Vrede en Lust 2003 Classic Red (Simonsberg-Paarl)

  1. $20
“Classic” means Bordeaux in this case, with four of the varieties included (65% Cabernet, 26% Merlot and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot). Shows a lot of leather on the nose, with dark plummy fruit underneath, while the palate is extracted, showing a full body, good acid and plenty of fine tannins. Dark berry flavors, almost charred, cover cherry flavors.  — M.D.  (12/31/2006)

Vrede en Lust 2003 Simond Red (Simonsberg-Paarl)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $15
A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from the Paarl region, this wine is lightly wooded and medium-bodied with ash, smoke, and raspberry on the nose, and on the palate, more ashy, earthy, smoky heft and a bit of chocolate and tea. It’s unusual and tough to tackle—the fruit is overpowered.  — S.K.  (3/1/2007)
