Wakefield Estate 2006 St. Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon (Clare Valley)
Cellar Selection
Price
$50
A perennial favorite, Wakefield’s St. Andrews bottling shows how good certain parts of Clare can be for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2006 displays a masterful blend of cedar, chocolate, mocha, cassis, baking spices and leather, all wrapped in an elegant coat of dusty but supple tannins. Drink 2015–2025.

Wakefield Estate 2001 St. Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon (Clare Valley)
Online Exclusive
Price
$50
Made in the winery’s classically savory style, this flagship Cabernet shows a touch of bricking at the rim and some maturing aromas and flavors of tobacco, cedar and earth. It’s broad and mouthfilling, creamy in texture yet not obviously fruity, finishing with lush, soft tannins and a touch of hickory smoke. Drink now–2015.

Wakefield Estate 2005 Shiraz (Clare Valley)
Editors' Choice
Price
$17
Taylor’s (marketed as Wakefield internationally) seems to be on a roll. This is a complex, multidimensional Shiraz laced with nuances ranging from mulberry and plum to meat and spice and on to coffee and black olive. It’s medium-bodied, with tannins that are supple enough to make it approachable right away.

Wakefield Estate 2004 St. Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon (Clare Valley)
Cellar Selection
Online Exclusive
Price
$50
This top Cabernet bottling from Taylors has been a consistent favorite over the last few vintages, and the 2004 continues the string. It's complex, bringing scents of mint, coffee, cassis and tobacco all to the dance, and matching that complexity with weight and richness. The tannins are a bit astringent right now, so try it from 2010-2020.

Wakefield Estate 2002 St. Andrews Shiraz (Clare Valley)
Price
$60
Fully mature, this mouthfilling, supple Shiraz shows off Clare’s savory side, beginning with beefy notes of bouillon and soy, then adding leather coffee and black olive to the mix. The long finish gracefully blends sweet and savory, then adds a dusting of fine tannins to keep everything in place. Drink now–2015.

Wakefield Estate 2006 Shiraz (Clare Valley)
Editors' Choice
Price
$17
Nicely crafted, this Clare Valley Shiraz delivers an unusual level of balance and elegance for the price. Herbal, peppery aromas lead off, followed by raspberry fruit framed by vanilla. The tannins are soft but present, the fruit sweetness balanced by crisp acids. It’s not so much a flashy wine as a balanced one to pair with a variety of meat dishes.

Taylors (exported under the Wakefield Estate label) is a top-notch source for Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2004 boasts a big nose of cassis, mint or eucalyptus and a touch of roasted peppers. It’s mouthfilling, with plenty of soft tannins, then finishes with more cassis and a hint of coffee.
