William Church 2007 Sur La Mer Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $28
A Bordeaux blend of five grapes, this melds blackberry and black cherry fruit with plenty of toasty oak and ground coffee. It’s a nice mix of fruit and barrel, dark and smoky, but not too heavy at 14.2% alcohol.  — P.G.  (5/1/2011)

William Church 2008 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $25
A fine selection of vineyards (Dineen, Red Willow, and Stillwater Creek) blends into a smooth, licorice-laden Syrah with plenty of pepper and spice. The fruit is tart and clean, the acids appropriate, the tannins polished, and the finish long and interesting, with seams of vanilla, licorice, tobacco and coffee.  — P.G.  (5/1/2011)

William Church 2006 Malbec (Wahluke Slope)

  1. $38
This is 100% Malbec from the Wahluke Slope AVA, and it is delicious. It has the sharp tannins and spicy herbaceousness of the grape, with very tight, tart cassis and black raspberry fruit. Firm, tight, pure and clean, it’s an excellent example of the variety.  — P.G.  (11/1/2008)

William Church 2008 Bishop's Blend Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
This is a quite different mix than previous versions of the Bishop’s Blend Red, and in my experience the best ever. Seductive and smoky, it grabs you from the get-go with aromas of sweet fruit and toasty barrel. It’s full in front, smooth in the middle and soft in the finish. Just a hint of herb and leaf in the tannins, which may play out well with a few years of…  — P.G.  (5/1/2011)

William Church 2009 Viognier (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $21
Fresh and beautifully defined, this textbook Viognier marries citrus fruit, peaches and honeysuckle to light tannins that suggest lemony tea. Persistent and balanced, with the alcohol at 14.3%, it is really a lovely sipping wine, just right for spring.  — P.G.  (5/1/2011)

William Church 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $29
A very classy effort, with the barrel influence pulled back and the fruit ripened to a nice blend of berry and raisin. Tannins are firm and slightly scrapey; and the structure overall brings the fruit, tannin, acids and oak into good balance. The finish lingers with threads of smoke and coffee.  — P.G.  (5/1/2011)

William Church 2009 Syrah (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $26
A blend of grapes from two excellent Yakima Valley vineyards—Dineen and Red Willow—results in a user-friendly Syrah loaded with pretty spices and scents of fresh cut tobacco and black tea. The leafy aromas wrap around somewhat blocky black cherry and blueberry fruit.  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)

William Church 2009 Gamache Vineyard Malbec (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $30
Black raspberry, blueberry and black cherry fruit is at the heart of this tart, racy wine. These primary fruit flavors are presented in a clean, immaculate frame of mostly neutral oak. Good length, with just a hint of finishing heat.  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)
