Woodward Canyon 2009 Chardonnay

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $44
Luscious, rich, balanced and intensely fruity, this stunning effort may well be the best Chardonnay ever produced in Washington. Two-thirds old- vine Celilo vineyard grapes are blended with estate-grown fruit from even older vines that were planted in 1976. Candied citrus, especially Meyer lemon, lemon verbena and other fruity herbs, stone fruits and subtle layers…  — P.G.  (12/31/2010)

Woodward Canyon 2006 Estate Red Wine (Walla Walla Valley (WA))

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $59
This is Woodward Canyon’s reserve—the best lots of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot create this very limited wine. It is built to age, and reflects the tight and muscular style that Rick Small has developed over the years. There is a strong mineral-metal vein running through the black and blue fruits, and some very lively spicy highlights…  — P.G.  (5/1/2009)

Woodward Canyon 2007 Merlot (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $39
True to the dense, muscular style of Woodward Canyon’s Merlots, this elevates the complexity in a near-perfect vintage. Deep and textural, it packs together concentrated red fruits, preserves and cassis. At first it shows a little heat from the 15% alcohol, but as it breathes open over hours (and even days) the primary fruit gives way to subtle veins of olive…  — P.G.  (12/31/2010)

Woodward Canyon 2007 Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon

  1. $89
Pure Cabernet from some of Washington’s oldest vines at Champoux and Sagemoor, this is a superb bottle, dense, compact and textural. A full mix of black fruits underscored with clean, moist earth and polished, silky tannins, finishes with pretty barrel flavors of spice and vanilla. Broad, deep and immensely pleasurable.  — P.G.  (12/31/2010)

Woodward Canyon 2009 Artist Series #18 Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $49
Here the high alcohol does not obscure the layered fruits and overall complexity of this exceptional Cabernet. Thick, ripe and richly endowed, it keeps its black fruit, ripe tannins and liquorous barrel notes all in proportion, and pulls in top flight fruit from Champoux, Sagemoor, the estate vineyard and other select sites. Earth, cedar and tobacco notes highlight…  — P.G.  (4/1/2012)

Woodward Canyon 1998 Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $60
The old vines in question hail from what used to be the Mercer Ranch Vineyard (now Champoux), and date back to the 1970s, making them ancient for Washington state. Purple black, spicy and deep, this is a sensational wine that manages to be both elegant and powerful at the same time. Dense, ripe fruit, detailed spices, balanced oak and perfect tannins make this a…  — P.G.  (6/1/2001)

Woodward Canyon 2006 Old Vines Dedication Series #26 Cabernet Sauvignon (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $84
This is a mix of 56% Sagemoor and 41% Champoux Cabernet, with a 3% splash of estate Petit Verdot. It’s detailed in the manner of a Pauillac, thick cassis fruit with deep veins of iron, cedar, licorice and a just a hint of silage. The fruit is dark and dense, but with breathing you’ll find it begins to open into a splendid blend of black cherry, cassis and mountain…  — P.G.  (5/1/2009)

Woodward Canyon 2006 Merlot (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $39
There is a little Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Syrah (4%) in the blend also. This is a silky, yet muscular— let’s say it, masculine—style of Merlot. Meaning that the fruit is concentrated with deep blue and black berry and cassis flavors, augmented with lead pencil. Beautiful polish and concentration characterize this wine, yet it’s quite approachable.  — P.G.  (5/1/2009)
