XYZin 2007 Vine Age Series 100 Year Old Vines Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $45
Dry, complex and tannic now, a young Zinfandel that gives your mouth a sandpapery, grippy feeling. Flavorwise, the wine is a little direct in fruit, offering waves of wild black, red and blue berries, tamari, mocha, molasses, sandalwood and pepperspice flavors. Not many Zins require time, but this one will benefit from 4–8 years in a cool cellar.  — S.H.  (12/31/2009)

XYZin 2006 Zinfandel (Russian River Valley)

  1. $30
Rich and exotic, this Zin offers a blast of ripe wild blackberry, briary currants, mulberry, mocha, pepper and spice flavors that are wrapped into sturdy tannins. It’s a strongly flavored wine that needs powerful fare to match it.  — S.H.  (4/1/2009)

XYZin 2007 50 Vine Age Series Zinfandel (Russian River Valley)

  1. $35
Very ripe, soft and fruity, basically a jammy bomb, with pepper-infused grilled blackberry, black cherry and mulberry flavors, complexed with interesting balsam, chocolate and molasses notes. The tannins are thick and decisive. Should have a smooth transition over the next six years.  — S.H.  (12/31/2009)

XYZin 2009 100 Year Old Vines Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $45
A big, full-bodied, rich Zinfandel, bone dry and spicy, with impressive flavors of wild berries, herbs, balsam and smoke. Needs equally big fare to stand up to, like barbecue slathered in sauce.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

XYZin 2006 Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $40
Strong and spicy, with extracted flavors of red and black berry jam, currants, orange tea and milk chocolate. Almost sweet, but not quite, with fierce tannins and mouthwatering acidity. Now through 2012.  — S.H.  (4/1/2009)

XYZin 2009 50 Year Old Vines Zinfandel (Russian River Valley)

  1. $30
Robust and deeply flavored in wild berry, tobacco, smoked meat and spice flavors. A somewhat rustic wine that needs big, rich roasts and barbecue.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

XYZin 2002 Sandy Lane Vineyard Zinfandel (Contra Costa County)

  1. $29
You sure can taste the sunny, fruity extract in this wine. It’s massive in black cherry liqueur, cassis and mocha-choca flavors. It’s also very soft, with a long, almost sweet finish.  — S.H.  (11/1/2005)
