Yangarra Park 2001 Appelation Series Merlot (McLaren Vale)
Online Exclusive
Price
$17
Young and vibrant now, with a great burst of fresh acidity, but with scads of fruit. Explodes on the palate with waves of sweet cherry, blackberry and plum flavors. Tannins are thick and fancy. This is an ager but it would be a shame to miss the youthful vivacity.

Yangarra Park 2001 Appellation Series Shiraz (McLaren Vale)
Online Exclusive
Pours black, and smells backward now. Plenty of airing brings out hints of black cherry, cassis, white pepper, and sage, but it’s still pretty mute. At the first sip the palate is flooded with rich flavors of the ripest summer blackberries. Better after 2004.

Yangarra Park 2001 Appelation Series Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra)
Online Exclusive
Price
$17
So massive in fruity-berry flavor, so young and acidic now, it’s practically undrinkable, although a greasy leg of lamb will work. The solid core of blackcurrants and rich, thick tannins suggest cellaring for a couple years.

Surprisingly true to its variety for this price, a lush, juicy, mouth-filling wine with smooth tannins and pretty flavors of berries and cherries. It’s just what you think of in Merlot, an easy-drinking wine that’s rich and full-bodied, yet silky and accessible. Best Buy.

This baby has aromas of just-picked ripe plums, boysenberries, and a peppery-chocolatey note that shows up on the palate. It’s dry, clean and sharp, and it’s a lot of fun. —S.H.

Yangarra Park 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (South Eastern Australia)

Easy drinking and juicy, this wine shows black and red plum, plus vanilla and wood-pulp aromas and flavors. Finishes with herb and dull oak flavors, and another helping of black plum.
