Zolo 2007 Torrontés (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $12
Better at first, when it gives green aromas and a lightness of being. But the palate runs kind of heavy, and the more you taste the heavier it gets. Soon pickle and tarragon come into play, and by then you’re longing for a lighter, cleaner wine.  — M.S.  (5/1/2008)

Zolo 2005 Bonarda (Mendoza)

  1. $12
Very dark and charred, but at the same time it smells like a fudge milkshake mixed with espresso. It’s plump but loose in structure, with generic black-fruit flavors and strange acidic kick.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Zolo 2008 Sauvignon Blanc (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $12
Quiet aromas of peach lead to sweet, basic flavors of nectarine and white table grapes. The finish is fleshy and pithy, with some heat and bitterness settling in after initial sugary sweetness. Drink immediately.  — M.S.  (8/1/2009)

Zolo 2005 Reserve Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
This Reserve holdover from ’05 is ’0 well-oaked, so there are clear-cut coffee and mocha aromas to go with adequate fruit scents. But the forceful oak leaves a lemony, hammering flavor on top of simple cherry fruit. With some oil and shoe polish on the finish, this wine doesn’t impress.  — M.S.  (8/1/2009)

Zolo 2008 Unoaked Chardonnay (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $12
Sweet and honeyed, but flat and cloying. Candied melon and citrus flavors run heavy and chunky, and the finish is more of the same. Big, ripe, sticky and sweet but definitely not elevated in class.  — M.S.  (12/1/2009)

Zolo 2009 Unoaked Chardonnay (Mendoza)

  1. $11
Melony and a bit oily on the nose, with little fruit or floral character to speak of. Tastes sweet and simple, with flavors of banana and lime. Innocuous in every way.  — M.S.  (5/1/2010)

Zolo 2003 Chardonnay (Mendoza)

  1. $14
Heavy and flat, with bulky butterscotch and ultraripe peach aromas. Starts better than it finishes; the initial citrus and melon flavors show some pop, but airing turns it mealy. Imported by Epic Wines.  — M.S.  (11/15/2005)

Zolo 2004 Chardonnay (Mendoza)

  1. $14
Not a whole lot to say about the soft, flat nose. It’s o.k., but that’s really about it. The palate, meanwhile, turns sweet, nearly to the point of candied. And the finish is downright sugary. Decent weight and feel help it along.  — M.S.  (6/1/2006)
