Zonin 2000 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  1. $35
The Amarones from Zonin have been consistently good the past few vintages, and this one is no exception, offering dark plum-prune and chocolate notes laced with hints of spice and tobacco. It’s round and mouthfilling without being unstructured, giving the impression that it has more to give in another few years. Tastes dry, unlike some Amarones these days.  — J.C.  (10/1/2006)

As Italy’s largest family-run wine estate, Zonin knows the Valpolicella territory well enough to guarantee successful sourcing of fruit and juice. This Amarone delivers polished tones of cherry, chocolate and apple-nut. Pair it with truffle gnocchi or stewed game meat.  — M.L.  (10/1/2007)

Chocolate, mature cherry, wild mushroom and mesquite wood follow immediately after riper notes of blackberry and strawberry. This is a dark, concentrated wine with spicy overtones painted in broad strokes. It has a dense, chewy texture and a long finish.  — M.L.  (12/1/2008)

Zonin 1999 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  1. $35
Round, smoky and solid, with all components in their proper places. We liked this wine’s ripe black cherry and plum flavors and found the mouthfeel to be rock solid and the acid-tannin balance just right. Maybe it doesn’t stand out, but it will fit the bill with nary a problem.  — W.E.  (11/1/2005)

Zonin 1997 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  1. $35
Some leather and hickory smoke dot the nose, and there’s some maple and whisky notes, too. The mouth is fruity and fresh, although deep at its core there seems to be a vegetal hint. The finish is spicy and warm.  — W.E.  (5/1/2003)
